About The Position

Huron’s Clinical Insights team is seeking a Data Engineer to help operate and support clinical data pipelines and client-facing applications across more than 10 client environments. The role covers the full lifecycle of client data infrastructure and application delivery, including SFTP ingestion, AWS data lake operations, application environment setup and deployment support, pipeline monitoring, and incident response. It is an operations-focused engineering position rather than a business intelligence or analytics role, and works closely with the team’s DataOps lead under that lead’s technical direction on environment provisioning, infrastructure changes, and architectural decisions. The Data Engineer supports application deployments from environment setup through go-live stabilization and ongoing support; validates daily data flows; provisions client environments; builds and maintains ingestion and validation pipelines; and investigates processing or application issues. The role also contributes to CI/CD pipelines, AWS infrastructure, Posit Connect administration, monitoring and alerting, operational documentation, security and compliance activities, and the team’s planned migration of its data lake and core tables to Snowflake. The position requires U.S. work authorization and a bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience. Huron estimates a base salary of $110,000–$150,000 USD, with an estimated total compensation range including annual incentive opportunity of $126,500–$172,500 USD. The role is eligible for Huron benefit plans, including medical, dental, and vision coverage and wellness programs.

Requirements

  • U.S. work authorization is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2–3+ years of experience in data engineering, DevOps, or DataOps roles, including hands-on support of production data pipelines.
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS data pipeline infrastructure, including S3, Athena, Lambda, EC2, and event-driven architectures using SNS/SQS.
  • Strong Python scripting ability for data ingestion, validation, and pipeline automation; comfort with Bash.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines such as Jenkins or equivalent, and Git-based version control practices such as branch protection and pull request workflows.
  • Experience setting up, configuring, and supporting application deployments, not only writing pipeline code.
  • Experience managing multi-client or multi-tenant data environments, including onboarding and provisioning new environments.
  • Experience participating in incident response and root cause analysis for data pipeline and application issues.
  • Ability to work as a generalist across infrastructure, data engineering, and DevOps in a fast-moving, client-driven environment where priorities may shift.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Snowflake or other modern cloud data warehouse platforms.
  • Familiarity with Posit Connect or R/Shiny environments.
  • Docker and containerized deployment experience.
  • SAML/SSO certificate management and cloud security practices, including IAM key rotation and PGP encryption.
  • Healthcare data environment experience, including SFTP clinical file delivery, PHI handling, or HL7/ADT familiarity.
  • Experience building monitoring and alerting systems for data pipelines.
  • Occasional direct client IT coordination experience, such as resolving file delivery issues, certificate renewals, or data quality questions.

Responsibilities

  • Support daily operation and monitoring of data pipelines across more than 10 client environments; triage no-data, bad-data, and processing failures and escalate complex issues.
  • Set up and configure client-facing application environments and support production deployments, go-live stabilization, and post-launch monitoring.
  • Validate that daily data loads and refreshes complete successfully across client applications, investigating logs and volumes when results appear abnormal.
  • Investigate application and data-load issues and diagnose root causes across pipeline and application layers.
  • Build and maintain client-specific ingestion pipelines using SFTP, S3, event-driven triggers, and file validation, with guidance from the DataOps lead.
  • Build and maintain reusable data validation scripts and ingest historical data for new client onboardings.
  • Resolve data quality incidents, including missing files, null values, file extension issues, and reprocessing needs.
  • Support the planned migration of the data lake and core tables to Snowflake.
  • Build and maintain monitoring and alerting for pipeline health, including data integrity alerts for null DRGs, late file delivery, and failed runs.
  • Investigate and resolve daily processing failures through root cause analysis, temporary fixes, and permanent remediation.
  • Manage AWS Lambda functions, including version control, deployment, and event-driven triggering using SNS/SQS.
  • Build data-volume quality-control dashboards to track pipeline health across clients.
  • Help manage AWS infrastructure, including EC2, S3, RDS, Athena, IAM, Lambda, and SNS/SQS, under the DataOps lead’s direction.
  • Support Posit Connect administration, including configuration, user access, and runtime management.
  • Provision new client instances, including database setup, ingestion configuration, and access controls.
  • Handle SAML/SSO certificate management and PGP encryption setup for secure client file delivery.
  • Help enforce code repository governance, including branch protection, pull request approval requirements, and deployment controls.
  • Build and maintain Jenkins-based CI/CD pipelines across development, staging, and production.
  • Set up and validate development and staging environments.
  • Maintain runbooks and operational documentation.
  • Support the Docker-based monorepo deployment architecture across client environments.
  • Execute and document client offboarding processes.
  • Support mandatory compliance activities, PHI data classification, and audit control documentation.
  • Manage certificate renewals, access restrictions, and credential rotation for SMTP and IAM.
  • Coordinate with client IT teams on file formats, schedules, encryption, file delivery issues, certificate renewals, and data quality questions as needed.

Benefits

  • Medical coverage
  • Dental coverage
  • Vision coverage
  • Wellness programs
  • Annual incentive compensation program
