About The Position

Manulife John Hancock's Technology Co-op Program offers a launchpad for success, providing support, structure, and opportunities for students. As a Data Engineer Co-op in the Group Functions Data Office, you will contribute to Business As Usual (BAU) initiatives, process enhancements, and new operational procedures. The role involves learning the company's data platform, infrastructure, and ETL best practices, while developing skills in Azure, Databricks, and modern data engineering workflows. You will collaborate closely with experienced data engineers, gaining hands-on experience in data ingestion, curation, and reporting. This is a 4-month hybrid co-op position, running from September 1st to December 18th, 2026, based in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada office, with in-office presence required Tuesday-Thursday and remote work optional on Mondays and Fridays. The program also offers early access to Manulife John Hancock’s premier early talent program, GRO, designed for graduating students.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of SQL, Python, and libraries such as Pandas, SQLAlchemy, and PySpark.
  • Data‑driven mindset and interest in data engineering best practices.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to ask questions and seek clarity.
  • Resourcefulness and ability to work through challenges.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of Azure cloud services; Databricks experience is an asset.
  • Awareness of CI/CD, DevOps concepts, and operational workflows.
