Data Engineer, Strategic Finance

WhopPalo Alto, CA
$200,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Whop is seeking its first dedicated Data Engineer within the Strategic Finance team. The primary goal of this role is to leverage the company's data to provide actionable insights that drive better decision-making across Whop. The company generates a significant amount of data from various sources, including payments, disputes, refunds, and ad campaigns. The Data Engineer will be responsible for building datasets, models, and metrics to transform this raw data into reliable and timely answers. This is a hands-on engineering position focused on writing production code and directly impacting Whop's financial products. Responsibilities include building and managing data pipelines for ingesting payment-processor settlement data, encoding accounting logic (e.g., bad-debt recognition, FX gain/loss, revenue categorization), and ensuring reported numbers reconcile with source data. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of engineering rigor, business curiosity, and the ability to translate data into strategic recommendations.

Requirements

  • 3+ years in Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, or a closely related role, preferably in a high-growth or fintech environment.
  • Deep expertise in SQL and Python.
  • Experience with a modern transformation and warehouse stack (dbt + BigQuery preferred; Snowflake/Redshift acceptable).
  • Proven experience defining financial and operating metrics and resolving data inconsistencies across complex, multi-system pipelines.
  • Strong grounding in version control (GitHub), CI/CD, testing, and documentation.
  • Working knowledge of financial concepts: revenue, margin, LTV/CAC, retention/churn, and the difference between an accounting number and a product metric.
  • Bias for action: ability to ship usable, iterative data models that deliver value quickly.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort with ambiguity.
  • Ability to build trust with Finance, Product, GTM, and Executive partners.

Responsibilities

  • Turn data into decisions by identifying insights in payments, growth, and unit economics to influence Whop's strategy.
  • Ship Whop financial product by writing production code and building features for Whop Financial Reports.
  • Build and own ingestion pipelines to ingest and backfill payment-processor settlement data at scale, across currencies and geographies.
  • Own the financial semantic layer by defining and standardizing metric logic for key financial and operating indicators.
  • Enable self-service analytics for finance and business teams by partnering with leadership to create intuitive dashboards and data models.
  • Set data standards, including modeling conventions, testing, documentation, and access controls, and ensure data quality and lineage.
