About The Position

We are looking for a Data Engineer with backend development experience and a growth mindset to join our Data and Customer Analytics (DCA) team. Our engineers combine creativity, curiosity, and determination to deliver impactful solutions. As a key member of the Data team, you will be responsible for a wide range of analytics features, initiatives, and enhancements within the Supply Chain data domain. The Data Engineering team helps Walmart manage this data by building scalable pipelines and data lakes that prepare large datasets for analysis and unlock actionable real-time insights. We leverage cross-functional data and machine learning to create a holistic view of profitability, driving millions of dollars in savings across product categories and geographies while enabling leadership to make faster, more informed decisions.

Requirements

  • Experience with Big Data technologies, including Apache Spark, cloud platforms, streaming technologies, Kafka Core, and Kafka Connect.
  • Strong programming experience in at least one language such as Java, Scala, or Python.
  • Expertise in SQL, including advanced SQL concepts, query optimization, and window functions.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with at least one cloud platform, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Microsoft Azure.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling and data migration methodologies.
  • Experience with data warehousing and business intelligence solutions.
  • Knowledge of workflow orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow.
  • Experience designing large-scale distributed systems and end-to-end solution architectures.
  • Knowledge of highly scalable Big Data solutions and modern ETL ecosystems.
  • Hands-on experience with relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.
  • Good-to-have experience with NoSQL technologies such as Druid, Cosmos DB, or similar platforms.
  • Experience establishing processes for data mining, data modeling, and data production.
  • Familiarity with Generative AI tools and AI-assisted software development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and 2 years' experience in software engineering or related field.
  • OR 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related field.
  • OR Master's degree in Computer Science.

  • Data engineering, database engineering, business intelligence, or business analytics.
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field and 2 years' experience in software engineering or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Extract data from identified databases and source systems.
  • Create scalable data pipelines and transform data into structures that support business and analytical requirements using appropriate techniques.
  • Stay current with emerging analytics and data engineering trends.
  • Support the prioritization of business requirements and service-level agreements (SLAs).
  • Identify the most suitable data sources that are fit for purpose.
  • Perform initial data quality checks on extracted data.
  • Analyze complex data elements, systems, data flows, dependencies, and relationships to contribute to conceptual, logical, and physical data models.
  • Develop logical and physical data models, including data warehouse and data mart designs.
  • Define relational tables, primary and foreign keys, and stored procedures to support robust data structures.
  • Evaluate existing data models and databases for inconsistencies and improvement opportunities.
  • Design efficient data flows and resolve data integration challenges.
  • Develop solutions and application features using appropriate programming languages and technologies.
  • Translate business, technical, and data requirements into scalable software solutions.
  • Create proof-of-concepts, test cases, and validation plans.
  • Perform testing, deployment, and production support activities.
  • Maintain code documentation, playbooks, and provide timely project updates.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to solve complex business problems through data-driven recommendations.
  • Develop business cases that identify expected ROI and cost savings.
  • Translate business requirements into actionable projects, activities, and deliverables aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Serve as a liaison between business and technical teams to deliver practical solutions.
  • Recommend new processes and ways of working to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Participate in designing data application architectures alongside senior architects.
  • Establish, implement, and document data governance standards and recommendations.
  • Interpret company and regulatory data policies and ensure compliance.
  • Educate stakeholders on data governance processes, policies, and best practices.
  • Recommend enhancements to data governance frameworks when needed.
  • Demonstrate technical expertise and apply it to the development, execution, and continuous improvement of action plans.
  • Support initiatives that align with customer and business needs while building consensus among stakeholders.
  • Build strong partnerships across cross-functional teams.
  • Identify business needs and execute appropriate processes and solutions.
  • Promote Walmart's policies, procedures, mission, values, and ethical standards.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and initiatives and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Support community outreach initiatives and company-sponsored events.
  • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architectures.
  • Develop standardized processes for data modeling, mining, and production.
  • Build custom software components and analytics applications.
  • Utilize multiple programming languages and tools to integrate data systems.
  • Recommend improvements to data reliability, efficiency, and quality.
  • Partner with business and engineering teams to define long-term data platform strategies.
  • Design and implement tools that enable analytics and data science teams to build and optimize solutions within the Walmart ecosystem.
  • Create training documentation and provide end-user training on data models and related tools.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and support system troubleshooting activities.
