About The Position

The J.R. Simplot Company is a diverse, privately held global food and agriculture company headquartered in Boise, Idaho. We are a true farm-to-table company with an integrated portfolio including food processing and food brands, phosphate mining, fertilizer manufacturing, farming, ranching and cattle production, and other enterprises related to agriculture. This role provides hands-on database engineering and administration expertise to support the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). The Database Engineer plays a critical role in maintaining reliability, performance, and scalability while partnering with multiple engineering teams to resolve issues and strengthen data processing practices across the organization. This position is based in Boise, ID and requires regular on‑site presence. Candidates must currently reside in the Boise metropolitan area. No relocation assistance is provided.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in database administration, data engineering, and development in a Microsoft SQL Environment.
  • Proficiency in SQL Server required, other database platform experience a plus.
  • Proficiency in SSIS development and maintenance required.
  • Very strong experience partnering with IT and business, combined with effective communication skills and the ability to provide technical across teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong coding experience (e.g., Java, C#) and familiarity with modern development tools would be a plus.
  • Expertise in software testing methodologies and tools would be a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) platform, ensuring uptime, performance, and data integrity.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering and delivery teams responsible for SQL Server databases and SSIS workloads to ensure consistent and reliable processing and to ensure adherence to established standards.
  • Perform deep analysis and troubleshooting of complex SQL Server processes to resolve failures, diagnose performance issues, and identify upstream data problems.
  • Optimize existing database structures, queries, and ETL workflows to improve efficiency and reliability, with a focus on sustaining current business processes.
  • Develop, maintain, and administer SSIS packages supporting enterprise data pipelines.
  • Lead and execute the transition from package-based deployment to project-based deployment, applying best practices for configuration, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Provide training and support for engineering teams transitioning to project-based deployment.
  • Serve as a technical guide to teams with varying levels of experience, helping them troubleshoot issues and adopt improved SQL Server and SSIS practices.
  • Share knowledge, provide mentorship, and promote consistent engineering approaches across teams.
  • Apply broad technical expertise to support related infrastructure components and interconnected systems.
