About The Position

Trane Technologies is seeking a Data Developer to own and evolve the data foundation of its enterprise telematics SaaS platform. The platform manages approximately 200,000 connected transport refrigeration units and processes millions of daily telemetry events, including alarms, sensor readings, engine state, geolocation, and operational metrics, through a cloud-native Azure IoT pipeline. The role owns the data lifecycle, from high-throughput IoT ingestion and transformation to storage, analytics delivery, and pipeline reliability. The Data Developer will shape platform architecture across Cosmos DB, Azure Data Explorer (ADX), Azure SQL, and Microsoft Fabric, and work with backend engineering, architecture, product, project management, and leadership. The position requires independent ownership of a scalable, reliable, cost-optimized Azure data platform. The work arrangement is onsite Monday through Thursday, with the employee choosing their work location on Fridays based on work requirements.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional data engineering experience building and owning production data platforms.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Hands-on Cosmos DB expertise, including partition strategy, indexing, change feed, TTL, multi-tenant patterns, and RU optimization.
  • Hands-on Azure Data Explorer expertise, including cluster management, ingestion pipelines, KQL, update policies, retention, and caching tiers.
  • Hands-on Azure SQL expertise, including schema design, stored procedures, query optimization, and ETL integration.
  • Experience with Azure Event Hubs and Service Bus, including high-throughput ingestion, consumer group management, and dead-letter handling.
  • Experience with Azure Functions for event-driven pipeline orchestration.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, including Real-Time Analytics, Lakehouse, or Eventstream; familiarity with Lakehouse architecture, data pipelines, and notebook-based transformations.
  • Strong KQL and Azure SQL skills, and working proficiency in Python, pySpark, C#/.NET, Java, or another relevant pipeline-development language.
  • Understanding of multi-tenant SaaS data architecture, including isolation patterns, shared infrastructure cost management, and tenant-aware querying.
  • Experience designing data models for time-series, telemetry, and event-driven workloads at scale.
  • Strong understanding of distributed data systems, including partitioning, consistency tradeoffs, and throughput-versus-latency optimization.
  • Hands-on experience supporting and owning production SaaS platforms end to end.
  • Knowledge of Git, distributed version control, resolving merge conflicts, and branching strategies.
  • Knowledge of Azure DevOps deployment pipelines.
  • Experience utilizing AI in a data platform ecosystem.
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally with architecture, development, DevOps, and product teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in IoT, telematics, fleet management, or large-scale connected-device platforms.
  • Familiarity with geospatial data, including H3 indexing, geofencing, or location-enriched telemetry pipelines.
  • Familiarity with .NET/C#/Java for Azure data pipeline development, including Azure Functions and Event Hub processors.
  • Experience with Azure Container Apps or other containerized Azure compute environments.
  • Exposure to MQTT, IoT Hub, or cellular device connectivity patterns such as private APN.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design and evolution of end-to-end data architecture across Cosmos DB, Azure Data Explorer, Azure SQL, and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Architect and optimize Cosmos DB for high-throughput IoT workloads, including partition keys, indexing, schema, TTL, RU/s throughput, and change feed.
  • Build and manage ADX clusters, ingestion pipelines, KQL queries, update policies, retention and caching policies, and materialized views.
  • Design and manage Azure SQL schemas, stored procedures, and ETL jobs for relational reporting and operational needs.
  • Architect hot-, warm-, and cold/analytics-path data flows across Event Hubs, real-time processing, Cosmos DB, and ADX.
  • Build and maintain ingestion pipelines using Azure Functions, Event Hubs, and Service Bus.
  • Design high-throughput pipelines processing millions of daily IoT events, including telemetry, alarms, lifecycle events, and geospatial data.
  • Develop transformation and enrichment logic using C#/.NET, Python, and/or pySpark in Azure Functions and Event Hub-triggered pipelines.
  • Implement data quality, validation, deduplication, and anomaly detection in ingestion pipelines.
  • Apply CI/CD practices to data pipeline deployments using GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps.
  • Design and maintain ADX update policies and Cosmos DB change feed processors for downstream data propagation.
  • Design scalable data models for time-series telemetry, alarm events, geospatial lookups, and fleet and asset metadata.
  • Implement partitioning strategies for Cosmos DB and ADX, and model multi-tenant isolation and access patterns in Cosmos DB and Azure SQL.
  • Manage data lifecycle policies across ADX and Cosmos DB, including cache tiers, retention, TTL, and archival strategy.
  • Collaborate with backend engineering to define microservice data contracts and Cosmos DB document schemas for operational APIs and analytics.
  • Partner with platform architects on the next-generation telematics platform data architecture.
  • Work with backend Java engineers on ingestion patterns, event processing, and data contracts across microservices.
  • Support product and business stakeholders with analytics queries, reporting, and ad hoc investigations using ADX/KQL.
  • Coordinate data milestones with project managers and communicate risks early.
  • Own reliability, observability, and SLAs for production data pipelines.
  • Monitor, diagnose, and optimize costs across Cosmos DB, ADX, Azure SQL, Event Hubs, and Azure Functions.
  • Implement governance, RBAC, and data access controls for multi-tenant SaaS requirements.
  • Create runbooks, architecture documentation, and knowledge-sharing materials for the engineering organization.

Benefits

  • Fertility coverage and adoption/surrogacy assistance.
  • Up to 15 vacation days, paid holidays, sick leave, and additional options for volunteer and parental leave.
  • 401(k) match.
  • Educational and training opportunities through company programs.
  • Tuition assistance and student debt support.
