About The Position

Another Source's client, Sabey Data Centers is recruiting a Data Center Operations Engineer 1 to join their team in Ashburn, VA. This is an opportunity to build hands-on expertise in mission-critical infrastructure while working across the systems that keep a high-performance data center operating around the clock. You’ll join a team where technical development is encouraged, gain exposure to a broad range of critical facility systems, and build the foundation for long-term growth in data center operations. The role begins with an initial training period designed to build familiarity with the site, systems, procedures, and day-to-day operations. Following training, this position works 12-hour shifts from 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m., rotating approximately every three months between days and nights. As a Data Center Operations Engineer 1, you’ll be part of the team responsible for the hands-on maintenance, monitoring, and operation of Sabey’s critical data center infrastructure. Working with electrical, mechanical, environmental control, and monitoring systems, you’ll help maintain the reliability and availability that Sabey’s customers depend on. This is an ideal opportunity for someone with mechanical, electrical, controls, or other relevant technical experience who wants to deepen their expertise in mission-critical operations. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and technicians, participate in preventive maintenance and incident response , and gain exposure to operations across different shifts and types of work. The rotating schedule is intentionally designed to broaden your experience across the site.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Relevant industry experience in mechanical, electrical, controls, or a related technical field.
  • Ability to quickly learn critical facility and data center operations systems using technical manuals and related documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with close attention to detail.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build strong professional relationships across teams.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal instruction while contributing effectively within a team environment.
  • Comfort working in an environment focused on preventive maintenance, operational readiness, and emergency response.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and safely operate a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Flexibility to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, on-call assignments, and overtime as operational needs require.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and the ability to learn additional software and digital tools.
  • A demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Aptitude and willingness to learn and utilize AI tools and technology.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical certifications or coursework related to data center operations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performing scheduled and preventive maintenance, equipment inspections, testing, and cleaning to support reliable operation and equipment longevity.
  • Monitoring environmental and infrastructure conditions, including temperature, humidity, power consumption, equipment status, and system health.
  • Responding to alarms and alerts, investigating issues using established procedures, and escalating concerns to senior engineers when needed.
  • Partnering with engineers and technicians to troubleshoot equipment issues, implement solutions, and document incidents and resolutions.
  • Supporting critical incident response and participating in on-call coverage to help maintain 24/7 operational readiness.
  • Assisting with inventory management, replacement parts, equipment tracking, and documentation of equipment configurations.
  • Coordinating with vendors and contractors during equipment installations, upgrades, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Following established operational, safety, and compliance procedures, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Supporting disaster recovery and business continuity activities to help minimize downtime and maintain service continuity.
  • Documenting incidents, contributing to root-cause analysis, and helping implement measures designed to prevent recurrence.
  • Communicating effectively with internal teams and stakeholders during maintenance activities and operational incidents.
  • Using AI and automation tools to streamline appropriate routine work, including document summaries, correspondence, meeting notes, and operational tracking.
