Trane is a worldwide leader in Data Centers and is seeking a Data Center Field Service Engineer to join our team supporting our commercial customers. This role can be located anywhere in the Continental United States. As a Data Center Field Service Engineer, you will be a senior-level team member of the Trane Data Center Services Team, responsible for traveling to and supporting data center cooling infrastructure across North America. Your primary focus will be on data center startup, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and emergency response activities. You will diagnose and repair complex HVAC and chiller systems, including air-cooled and water-cooled equipment, and support field activities involving screw and centrifugal compressor technologies. This role requires responding to critical service events, equipment failures, and customer emergency situations in a timely and professional manner. Please note that this role will require 75% plus travel, typically contained within the United States but can include international travel.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in the HVAC industry, with experience in mission-critical, large-tonnage, or complex chiller environments.
  • Strong knowledge of thermal cooling systems, including air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, pumps, hydronic systems, cooling towers, and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and repair of mission-critical cooling equipment.
  • Experience supporting screw and centrifugal compressor technologies in demanding operating environments.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues affecting cooling system performance and reliability.
  • Familiarity with commissioning processes, sequence of operations, equipment checkout, and performance verification.
  • Experience working with equipment manufactured by Trane, York, Carrier, Daikin, Vertiv, Liebert, Stulz, and Johnson Controls.
  • Strong commitment to safety, documentation accuracy, and professional customer support in critical environment applications.
  • A valid driver’s license, with no major or frequent traffic violations
  • Ability to travel 75% plus
  • Must be able to safely and legally operate a vehicle using a seat belt
  • Must be able to wear helmets, safety goggles, fall protection harness and safety boots to safely perform job duties
  • Must be able to twist the trunk of your body 90 degrees in each direction
  • Must be able to squat and touch the floor with both hands
  • Must be able to reach your hands over your head
  • Must be able to stand on concrete surfaces for extended periods, routinely up to 4 hours
  • This position is highly physical and requires regular use of hands, fingers, walking, stooping, kneeling and climbing ladders.
  • It requires employees to regularly lift and or move up to 10 lbs., frequently lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move more than 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to safely use a ladder with a 350 lb. total weight limit, while carrying equipment of 50 lbs. or less
  • Must be able to maneuver confined access areas, as small as 30” vertical x 45” horizontal
  • Must be able to comfortably and routinely access rooftops with extension and/or fixed ladders at heights of 15’ to 20’, and occasionally, up to 50 feet +
  • This role may be exposed to variable weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, heights, risk of electrical shock, noisy operating equipment and other variable environmental conditions based on location.
  • Typically requires two to five years of experience in HVAC; or equivalent combination of education (Technical School) and experience.
  • Typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education (Technical School) and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous OEM training, factory startup experience, or field commissioning experience is preferred.
  • A 2+ year degree, technical certification, or equivalent training in HVAC, mechanical systems, electrical systems, or a related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to and support data center cooling infrastructure across North America, with a primary focus on data center startup, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and emergency response activities.
  • Diagnose and repair complex HVAC and chiller systems, including air-cooled and water-cooled equipment.
  • Support field activities involving screw and centrifugal compressor technologies.
  • Respond to critical service events, equipment failures, and customer emergency situations in a timely and professional manner.
  • Support customer operations teams during planned deployments and active service assignments.
  • Assist with system performance evaluations, root cause analysis, and reliability improvement efforts.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely service records, field reports, and related documentation.
  • Follow all company safety policies, customer site requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain professional and effective communication with customers, contractors, project teams, and internal stakeholders.
  • Travel extensively throughout North America based on business needs, project requirements, and customer demand.
  • Perform startup, troubleshooting, repair, and operational support for Data Center cooling equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues affecting chiller and cooling system performance.
  • Support emergency response activities during equipment failures and critical service events.
  • Verify proper system operation following maintenance, repair, and service activities.
  • Execute preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance activities in accordance with company standards and customer requirements.
  • Ensures customer satisfaction by identifying, analyzing, diagnosing and repairing equipment and systems at customer’s location.
  • Performs advanced customer support activities for equipment and systems products.
  • May instruct customers in proper use and operation of equipment.
  • May assist lower level technicians.
  • May refer the most complex problems to higher level personnel such as supervisor or field engineers.
  • Plays a vital role in ensuring customer satisfaction by diagnosing and resolving complex customer support issues.
  • Has the ability to diagnose system problems.
  • May provide coaching and training and act subject matter experts for less experienced technicians.
  • Plays a vital role in ensuring customer satisfaction by diagnosing and resolving most complex customer support issues.
  • Has the ability to diagnose and resolve problems which other technicians cannot fulfill.
  • Responsible for servicing products and equipment on assigned projects.
  • Work on highly complex problems.
