About The Position

The Commissioning Field Technician is a full-time, field-based position responsible for supporting the commissioning of mission-critical data center infrastructure. This role requires strong mechanical and HVAC expertise and is responsible for planning, coordinating, documenting, and executing commissioning activities throughout the project lifecycle. Responsibilities include overseeing equipment startup, functional performance testing, Level 2A (L2A) inspections, Level 2 (Yellow Tag) completion, Integrated Systems Testing (IST), and verifying that building systems are installed and operating in accordance with project specifications and operational readiness requirements. Working as an embedded member of the contractor's commissioning team, the Commissioning Field Technician operates under the direction of the Site Commissioning Lead while representing EMA's commitment to quality, safety, and technical excellence. This position collaborates closely with owners, contractors, equipment vendors, and commissioning authorities (CxA) to ensure successful project execution. This is a long-term assignment with a minimum expected project engagement of two years.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two to five years of experience in commissioning, mission-critical facilities, data center infrastructure, MEP construction, facility operations, controls integration, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electrical distribution systems, standby generation, UPS systems, switchgear, HVAC systems, chilled water systems, building automation systems (BAS), or similar building systems preferred.
  • Experience supporting commissioning activities through Level 2 (L2), including equipment inspections, startup verification, pre-functional checklists, functional testing, deficiency tracking, and commissioning documentation preferred.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check and drug screening is required.
  • Employment is contingent upon meeting all client-specific site access, security clearance, and onboarding requirements, as applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • An associate's degree, technical certification, military technical training, or coursework in engineering, construction management, facilities operations, building systems, or a related field is preferred.
  • Relevant industry experience may be substituted for formal education.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage commissioning checklists, workflows, and documentation using Autodesk Forma (previously known as Autodesk Construction Cloud - ACC).
  • Coordinate and oversee Level 2A (L2A) equipment arrival inspections to verify equipment condition, storage requirements, and installation readiness.
  • Track and manage commissioning progress through Level 2 (Yellow Tag) completion.
  • Lead startup and functional testing activities for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, controls, and mission-critical systems.
  • Review installation quality and verify compliance with project specifications, commissioning plans, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Coordinate with equipment vendors and subcontractors during startup, troubleshooting, and testing activities.
  • Generate, track, and close commissioning deficiencies, punch list items, and corrective actions.
  • Facilitate quality control inspections and verify completion of turnover documentation.
  • Monitor testing activities and maintain accurate commissioning records within ACC.
  • Support execution of Integrated Systems Testing (IST) to validate system interactions and operational sequences under various operating scenarios.
  • Ensure all testing is performed safely and in compliance with site safety requirements and commissioning procedures.
  • Participate in Owner, Architect, Contractor (OAC), commissioning, and project coordination meetings.
  • Provide detailed status updates, progress reporting, and commissioning metrics to project leadership and stakeholders.
  • Assist with development of commissioning schedules, test scripts, and turnover packages.
  • Verify operational readiness and support successful handover to facility operations teams.
  • Execute pre-functional checklists (PFCs) and functional performance tests (FPTs) for precision cooling systems, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, AHUs, and associated controls.
  • Verify proper operation of redundancy/failover sequences.
  • Coordinate with TAB contractor to confirm airflow and pressurization requirements are met prior to FPT execution.
  • Verify BMS/BAS integration and control sequences for HVAC equipment against Sequences of Operation
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely field documentation including PFC/FPT logs, issue tracking, and test reports.
  • Support preparation of the Commissioning Report sections relevant to assigned systems.
  • Support O&M delivery, Owner Training Verification and Occupancy and Closeout activities as directed
