About The Position

The Data and Evaluation Manager is an organized, strategic, and results-driven individual who manages the collection, evaluation, and reporting of data for assigned Community Schools and United Way initiatives. This position serves as the department’s primary data and evaluation contact for assigned schools and programs, turns data into clear findings on program performance and outcomes, and supports the department’s data systems work led by the Data Systems Manager. The Data and Evaluation Department, led by the Vice President of Data and Evaluation, works as one team to ensure a data-driven approach to United Way’s initiatives, with a focus on Community Schools. Within the department, the Data Systems Manager leads the department’s data infrastructure: the databases, software platforms, data standards, and data security the team relies on. The Data and Evaluation Managers lead the collection, evaluation, and reporting of program data for assigned Community Schools and initiatives. The roles are interdependent: the Data Systems Manager builds and maintains the systems and standards, and the Data and Evaluation Managers put them to work with schools and partners and support systems projects through testing, feedback, and school-level data quality. This position reports to the Vice President of Data and Evaluation. Nothing in this job description restricts management’s right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in data analytics, information systems, computer science, research and evaluation, or related field.
  • At least five years’ related experience preferred.
  • Education-related field preferred.
  • Nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Ability to translate programs and initiatives into outcomes-based frameworks with clear outputs, indicators, and program- and community-level outcomes.
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods, with the ability to analyze and interpret research data.
  • Working knowledge of data systems, standards, and procedures, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and custom software.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL, Microsoft Power Platform and Power BI, APIs and system integrations, cloud platforms, version control, and scripting languages such as Python or JavaScript.
  • Strong leadership, teamwork, management, interpersonal, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, training, and facilitation skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Project management experience, including managing multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, solving problems, and adapting to change under pressure.
  • Empathy for people experiencing need or risk and commitment to shared organizational and community goals.
  • Communicates with staff, volunteers, and partners.
  • Positions self to use office equipment and computer systems.
  • Access to reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Manages aspects of the collection, evaluation, and reporting of Community School data, as assigned, in realms including but not limited to: Community School Action Plans, Community School Quarterly Reports, Ongoing data collection and tracking processes, Data entry via internal software and applications, following department data standards, Community School surveys and focus groups, including developing content and analyzing results, Community School Leadership Team attendance and guidance.
  • Acts as main point of contact for assigned Community Schools and Community School Directors for data-related tasks and expectations.
  • Provides day-to-day training and guidance to Community School Directors on data entry and the use of internal software, using department training materials and standards.
  • Analyzes and interprets program data for assigned schools and initiatives, translating findings into clear reports for school partners, United Way leadership, and other audiences.
  • Supports data systems projects led by the Data Systems Manager, including testing new or updated databases, survey instruments, and workflows before rollout and supporting implementation at assigned schools.
  • Ensures that data collected and entered for assigned schools and programs meets department data standards, and works with the Data Systems Manager to resolve data quality issues.
  • Gathers and shares user needs, feedback, and recurring issues from Community School Directors and staff to inform improvements to data systems and procedures.
  • Serves as first-line support for assigned schools on data entry and software questions, escalating technical and system issues to the Data Systems Manager.
  • Serves as a data and evaluation point of contact for 211.
  • Leads development of ad hoc reports.
  • Contributes to grant proposals, reports, and other fundraising efforts related to research and evaluation through preparing analysis of program performance and providing context in terms of relevant population-level and organizational statistics.
  • Develops data and research-based insights that lift the United Way brand and showcase the work of Community Schools.
  • Supports the education of United Way staff on data best practices, internal collection and analysis procedures and current trends.
  • Contributes to organizational values by fostering data-driven solutions.
  • Provides capacity building and technical assistance to United Way’s partners on data collection, evaluation, and use.
  • Represents United Way on various community and professional bodies as necessary, and at United Way and other community events.
  • Cultivates, manages and/or maintains positive, productive relationships with board members, volunteers, community and business leaders, investors, stakeholders, vendors, donors and community partners.
  • Is visible in the community as a United Way professional.
