About The Position

Heritage Vet Partners (HVP) is seeking a Data Analytics Engineer to own the SQL side of their data warehouse. This role is crucial for transforming raw warehouse tables into clean, consistent, and trustworthy data products. The Analytics Engineer will be responsible for the curated schema of reporting views, business logic, and semantic model foundations that stakeholders from executives to clinic staff rely on. This is a hands-on builder role for someone who excels at data modeling, writes SQL fluently, and takes pride in making messy data understandable. The role will also leverage AI tools to accelerate development and documentation while maintaining critical judgment.

Requirements

  • 3+ years working hands-on with SQL Server or Azure SQL in an analytics, data warehousing, or reporting context.
  • Expert-level T-SQL skills, including complex joins, window functions, and CTEs.
  • Real experience with dimensional modeling and reporting-layer design (star schemas, conformed dimensions, slowly changing logic).
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft BI stack: Analysis Services (tabular), Power BI semantic models.
  • Comfort using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to draft, review, and debug complex SQL.
  • Ability to validate AI-generated logic before production deployment.
  • A track record of turning vague business questions into precise data definitions.
  • Experience defending data quality.
  • Strong written communication skills for documentation, view comments, and metric definitions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in healthcare, clinical, or other regulated data environments.
  • Exposure to version-controlled model development (TMDL, Tabular Editor, Git-based workflows).
  • Power Query / M experience, or experience supporting Excel-based analytical consumers of the warehouse.
  • Familiarity with modern analytics engineering tooling and practices (dbt or similar).
  • Experience evaluating or adopting AI-assisted BI features (e.g., Power BI Copilot, natural language query tools).

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain the reporting view layer of the SQL Server / Azure SQL data warehouse.
  • Translate business definitions into durable SQL logic for metrics.
  • Own the structure of Analysis Services / Power BI semantic models, including tables, relationships, and core measures.
  • Build validation checks and reconciliation queries to ensure data quality.
  • Investigate data discrepancies, trace them to root causes, and implement fixes.
  • Optimize the performance of the reporting layer through efficient T-SQL, query tuning, and appropriate view/table design.
  • Maintain clear documentation of the reporting schema, metric definitions, and data lineage.
  • Utilize AI coding assistants to accelerate T-SQL development, documentation, and code review.
  • Partner with data engineering on upstream schema changes, BI developers on model needs, and business stakeholders on data definitions.
