About The Position

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for a Data Analyst to support the SEFSCs’ Fisheries Statistics Divisions (FSD) Southeast Region Headboat Survey (SRHS). Primary Function: The SRHS Data Analyst provides administrative and analytical support to manage and analyze fishery-dependent data from the SRHS. The position is responsible for database management, QA/QC of biological samples and data, production of analytical summaries in support of SEDAR and annual reporting, and participation in scientific meetings and outreach.

Requirements

  • BS Degree plus three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of applying basic concepts, principles, and methodologies of fishery data management and analysis.
  • Experienced and proficient in advanced database software including SAS, R, Oracle, and Access.
  • Ability to summarize data, perform statistical analysis, and present results in report or presentation form.
  • Must be able to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • MS Degree in Marine Science or a related field
  • Experience managing and analyzing catch and effort information from recreational fishermen.
  • Knowledge of statistical concepts and theory.
  • Expertise in data management and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, organize, and maintain SRHS and NMFS databases to ensure proper functioning, data quality, and error correction.
  • Perform QA/QC checks on otolith and spine collections in the Oracle system; provide error reports to port agents for corrections.
  • Compile dockside sampling data from headboat port agents in the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
  • Maintain and develop quality assurance and quality control analyses and procedures on Headboat Survey data.
  • Compile and maintain vessel directory and contact information; track vessel reporting compliance.
  • Utilize SAS and/or R, Oracle, and relational databases to summarize landings and effort estimates and perform compliance monitoring.
  • Perform and assist with data analyses in support of data requests and general scientific inquiries.
  • Perform data summaries and analyses in support of SEDAR stock assessment activities.
  • Assist in completion of annual report summarizing headboat survey data including landings, effort, and fishery impacts.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary special projects within and outside the agency.
  • Write scientific proposals to compete for extramural funding; review reports, manuscripts, and scientific proposals.
  • Participate in public outreach events and scientific meetings/workshops as required.
