About The Position

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) aims to eliminate racial and other inequities leading to premature mortality by addressing systemic issues and promoting health and well-being in New York City communities. CHECW comprises several bureaus, including the Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building (HEBC). HEBC focuses on building community power and capacity to tackle health inequities and social determinants of health through various units: Policy and Partnership, Health Equity Capacity, and Neighborhood Behavioral Health and Resiliency. The Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI), rooted in health equity principles, employs a multi-strategy, trauma-informed approach to reduce violence risk factors by addressing behavioral and structural impediments and reinvesting in affected neighborhoods. VPI supports hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) and the Strong Messenger Project (SMP). The Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building is seeking to hire a Data Analyst for the Violence Prevention Initiatives (VPI).

Requirements

  • Experience processing, cleaning, manipulating, and analyzing program or administrative datasets using statistical software such as SAS, and/or R is required.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
  • Three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization (if appointed to Assignment Level II and above with a Master's degree).
  • At least two years of experience in responsible full-time research in the appropriate field of specialization (if education and/or experience is equivalent to a doctorate degree with one year of experience or a master's degree with three years of experience).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with program staff and partners to develop and refine data collection instruments and improve data systems and processes.
  • Work with program stakeholders to develop specific and measurable program metrics for operational and performance management.
  • Use SAS, or R to process, clean, and prepare data for analysis and reporting; conduct regular data checks; document data management procedures (e.g., data dictionaries); monitor data quality; identify and resolve issues with program staff and partners.
  • Prepare routine reports and presentations of program performance; clearly and meaningfully communicate (oral and written) results of analyses to program staff/ partners/ leadership and/or non-technical audiences; write scientific articles for publication.
  • Maintain and update existing dashboards as needed using software such as PHPC, Tableau or PowerBI; assist in developing new dashboards as needed.
  • Respond quickly and accurately to ad hoc data requests for internal (e.g., Directors, Assistant Commissioners) and external audiences (e.g., public hearings, City Hall).
  • Work with leadership and program stakeholders on the interpretations and limitations of data analysis results.
  • Develop training materials and conduct trainings on updates to data collection systems as needed; create guidance documents for internal staff and external users detailing updates to the system; provide data technical assistance to external users.
  • Serve on workgroups/cross-agency committees regarding community violence prevention research and data.
  • Manage multiple projects and collaborate with other research and program staff.
  • Incorporate an equity lens in all aspects of work.
  • Conduct special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
