New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) coordinates citywide emergency planning and response. Its GIS Unit integrates, analyzes, and visualizes location-based information in maps, datasets, summary metrics, and applications. The GIS Specialist will join the Public Safety GIS Data Development Center and, under the supervision of the Deputy Director, analyze, visualize, and report on geospatial information for the agency’s executive, planning, and operations staff. This is described as an early-career role on a team of GIS professionals. The role supports preparedness and response operations through geospatial data acquisition, quality assurance, maintenance, and management; map and application production; and development of Python-based GIS tools for geospatial data science and administrative workflows. The position participates on an Emergency Operations Center team, including periodic readiness training and exercises. During emergency activations, evening, weekend, holiday, or extended-shift work may be required. EOC teams are on call for three weeks at a time, followed by six weeks off. The position has guaranteed funding through a federal Community Development Block Grant for disaster recovery: the posting lists both a two-year and a three-year funding description, with possible extension beyond either period. The selected candidate will generally work in person at the designated office three days per week, subject to telework policies and reasonable accommodations. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without employer support. A separate cover letter must be submitted in the application portal. The high end of the salary range is available to candidates with at least two years of City service.
