About The Position

Works under the supervision of the Pathology Manager. The Cytotechnologist's primary job function is the microscopic examination of slides to detect cell changes caused by disease process. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
  • Bachelor of Science Degree required
  • CT licensure by ASCP required

  • One year of experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Performs microscopic examination of slides to detect cell changes by disease process. Determines type and stage of illness and disease, correlates findings with patient clinical history, classifies results into categories and issues provisional diagnosis.
  • Records classifications on slides and alerts Pathologists to abnormal cell structures for further examination.
  • Receives and processes specimens including blood exudates, scrapings and other body fluids and materials for examination.
  • Performs preparation and cover slipping of slides. Performs specialized staining procedures.
  • Assists physicians with fine needle aspirations. Prepares and processes slides. Performs screening.
  • Performs quality control and quality assurance and completes required documentation. Coordinates cytology proficiency survey program.
  • Maintains patient demographics. Maintains follow-up file for abnormal cases.
  • Maintains screening documentation to meet CAP requirements. Maintains area to meet inspection.
