About The Position

The Cytotechnologist II examines slides microscopically to detect abnormal, atypical cells that may be present. This position is part of the opening team for Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital, a new state-of-the-art, seven-story, multi-specialty hospital opening in Summer 2026. The hospital will be a vital 550,000 square-foot healthcare hub offering over 300 inpatient beds, 69 emergency and observation beds, 11 operating rooms, four cardiac interventional suites, dedicated labor and delivery services with a NICU, and comprehensive cardiovascular, neurology, and oncology services. Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved school of Cytotechnology.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or Cytotechnology
  • Current license as Cytotechnologist in the State of Florida – renewed biennial in August.
  • Certified Cytotechnologist (ASCP) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists – renewed annually.
  • Five (5) years of experience in an academic endoscopy unit with assessment of more than 2000 EUS-FNA samples.
  • Experience with ROSE assessment of cholangioscopy-guided biopsies.
  • Basic knowledge of statistics and statistical analysis.
  • Teaching experience in processing samples and assessing for ROSE in educational lab settings using teaching models.
  • Experience with telepathology technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • Passed research, ethics, and compliance training (CITI), is preferred.
  • Experience with use of basic science Nikon software for tissue quantification in research, is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Microscopically examines GYN and Non-GYN cytologic preparations for cellular abnormalities and pathologic conditions, referring abnormal cases to the Pathologist as appropriate.
  • Considers clinical history of the patient, marks pertinent findings; makes preliminary cytologic interpretation in consultation with attending pathologist and enters case results into the computer system.
  • Provide specimen processing and rapid on-site evaluation of adequacy for FNA/FNB and biopsy touch prep specimens in endoscopy/surgical suites as requested.
  • Performs and documents all quality control and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Performs specimen receiving and processing as needed.
  • Maintains proper inventory of supplies.
  • Assumes following responsibilities, as needed: projects, teaching, tech in charge, and evaluation of new technology.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program including performance and evaluation of key quality indicators.
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements.
  • Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.
