The Cytologist position at Evanston Hospital is a full-time role responsible for overseeing daily operations within the assigned laboratory section, ensuring smooth workflow and accurate specimen processing. This role involves reviewing documentation and reports, addressing abnormal results, troubleshooting technical and methodology issues, and resolving specimen handling problems. The Cytologist will act as a primary resource for technical inquiries related to cytology procedures, instrument operations, and specimen handling. Key responsibilities include accurately evaluating and reporting on gynecological, non-gynecological, and fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens in compliance with regulatory standards, matching requisitions and slides, accurately labeling slides, and marking diagnostic material for further review. The role also requires correctly identifying abnormal or high-risk cases, referring them to the Clinical Pathologist as needed, and ensuring timely and accurate entry of results into the computer system. The Cytologist will support FNA procedures by ensuring all necessary supplies are prepared and by preparing specimens for evaluation, collaborating with the Pathologist for adequate evaluation and sample preparation, and ensuring appropriate labeling of specimens and slides. Participation in proficiency testing, reviewing and discussing incorrectly diagnosed cases for continuous improvement, and facilitating inventory management are also key aspects of this position. Ensuring proper organization and maintenance of the work area to adhere to cleanliness and safety standards is also required.
