This position is responsible for assuring the integrity of specimens throughout all phases of processing. The role involves performing various culturing procedures, including establishing blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures, monitoring growth, and making decisions regarding feeding, subculturing, and harvesting. The technologist will also perform slide preparations and staining techniques (standard Geisma, Q-, R-, C- banding and NOR staining), and conduct detailed microscopic analysis, including ruling out chromosomal mosaicism and selecting optimal cells for documentation. Proficiency in operating automated karyotyping equipment and performing FISH processing and analysis is required. Additional responsibilities include managing record keeping, maintaining stock supplies, orienting new personnel, implementing new procedures, continuing education, and potentially applying cryogenic technology for specimen storage. The role also involves coordinating functions with other laboratory personnel, managing quality control of culture apparatus (monitoring CO2 levels, supply, incubator disinfection, hood maintenance, and liquid N2 levels), staying updated on cytogenetics research and development, performing validation studies for new tests, and reporting any issues that could affect patient care to supervisory personnel. Effective LIS and equipment data management skills are also essential.
