About The Position

The Adjunct Cybersecurity Researcher will support research activities associated with an NIH R15-funded project focused on explainable artificial intelligence and intrusion detection for healthcare cybersecurity. The position will contribute to the design, implementation, evaluation, and documentation of machine learning and cybersecurity research conducted within the Department of Computer Science. The researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator and undergraduate research students, with responsibilities including machine learning model development, cybersecurity data analysis, experimental implementation, research documentation, and support for scholarly publications and presentations. This position is not considered essential staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Coursework, research, or project experience in machine learning, cybersecurity, programming, or data analysis is required.
  • Equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • Proficiency in programming, preferably Python.
  • Knowledge of machine learning, data analysis, and experimental evaluation methods.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity concepts, intrusion detection, and network or system security.
  • Ability to work with research datasets and implement reproducible experimental workflows.
  • Ability to document code, methods, and research results clearly and accurately.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with faculty and undergraduate researchers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage research tasks and meet project deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with machine learning or explainable AI applied to cybersecurity
  • Experience with intrusion detection systems, network security, or healthcare cybersecurity
  • Experience conducting independent research and contributing to research publications or presentations
  • Familiarity with Python-based machine learning and data analysis tools
  • Experience working with or mentoring undergraduate research students

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate machine learning and explainable AI models for healthcare cybersecurity applications.
  • Conduct experiments involving intrusion detection, cybersecurity datasets, and related analytical methods.
  • Perform data preprocessing, model evaluation, performance analysis, and interpretation of experimental results.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of research software and experimental workflows.
  • Document research methods, experimental procedures, code, and results.
  • Assist in preparing figures, tables, technical reports, manuscripts, posters, and conference presentations.
  • Conduct literature reviews and contribute to the interpretation and communication of research findings.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in mentoring undergraduate students participating in the NIH R15 research project.
  • Provide technical guidance on programming, machine learning, cybersecurity experiments, and research documentation.
  • Participate in research meetings and coordinate project activities as needed.
