About The Position

Varda is seeking a Summer Cybersecurity Intern to assist the Information Security team with daily tasks. This internship offers a hands-on experience in a real-world cybersecurity environment, focusing on monitoring security alerts, documenting processes, and preparing for cybersecurity certifications. Interns will work closely with the Cybersecurity Analyst and InfoSec Engineer to learn the operational aspects of a corporate security team. The internship is full-time and on-site in El Segundo, CA, with dates ranging from May to June, depending on university schedules. Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program in cybersecurity, computer science, information technology, information systems, or a related major.
  • Completed coursework or self-taught knowledge in at least two of the following areas: networking, operating systems, user account and password management, security incident response, or security monitoring.
  • Comfortable reading logs and working with data in spreadsheets.
  • Basic understanding of scripting.
  • Clear written communication skills.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Willingness to ask questions when clarification is needed.
  • Authorized to work in the United States for the full duration of the internship without visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Working towards a beginner certification such as CompTIA Security Plus or Network Plus.
  • Experience with security tools in a home lab, school club, or capture the flag competition.
  • Familiarity with tools like Zscaler, CrowdStrike, ThreatLocker, Darktrace, AlienVault, Okta, or Vanta.
  • Understanding of compliance frameworks such as NIST 800 171, NIST 800 53, ISO 27001, or CMMC.
  • Ability to write simple scripts in Python, PowerShell, or Bash.

Responsibilities

  • Review daily security alerts, analyze their nature, and document actions taken.
  • Assist in setting up, fine-tuning, and improving the configuration of security tools such as Zscaler, CrowdStrike, ThreatLocker, Darktrace, and AlienVault.
  • Maintain up-to-date security event logs to ensure a clear record of events and their resolutions.
  • Extract and organize sample logs from security tools for auditor review.
  • Track reports from external security partners, ensuring timely receipt and proper filing.
  • Upload reports and updates into compliance tracking software.
  • Independently manage a significant summer project, chosen in collaboration with a lead, such as a logging gap analysis, an updated incident response guide, or a dashboard creation.
