Cyber Capability Engineer

Metrea•Washington, DC
•$190,000 - $200,000

About The Position

Metrea Algorithmics LLC is seeking a hands-on cyber practitioner to develop, deploy, and support operational cyber capabilities alongside customers. The role includes building deployable cyber tools, wireless reconnaissance systems, and the software and infrastructure that connect them. Work covers device and network characterization, authorized access workflows, distributed sensors, and operator command-and-control interfaces. This position combines cyber operations, software development, systems integration, and expeditionary mission support. The engineer develops capabilities in the lab, prepares and troubleshoots systems in the field, supports customers and operators, and turns operational experience into tested tools, deployment procedures, and documentation. Data engineering and AI are used to improve operational outcomes, with operational suitability assessed for accuracy, confidence, latency, and edge-compute requirements. The position is full-time and exempt, with typical hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; schedules may change based on department and business needs. Work takes place in office and field environments, and some assignments may involve austere, forward-deployed, or operationally dynamic settings. Travel is up to 10%. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and be U.S. citizens. The role requires eligibility to obtain a Top Secret / TS/SCI clearance and may require compliance with export control regulations.

Requirements

  • At least five years of relevant experience across cyber operations, offensive security, security tooling, or operational systems engineering; alternatively, a relevant bachelor's degree and at least two years of directly applicable experience.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Hands-on experience in penetration testing, red teaming, vulnerability research, cyber mission support, or a comparable technical operational role.
  • Ability to understand and adapt the behavior of technical tools, beyond simply running them.
  • Strong practical development skills in Python or Rust.
  • Experience with Bash and Linux-native tooling, and comfort reading, modifying, debugging, and integrating existing code.
  • Strong Linux and networking fundamentals, including packet analysis, IP and wireless networking, remote access, service configuration, and distributed-systems troubleshooting.
  • Experience with structured data, databases, and APIs.
  • Experience with version control and repeatable testing and deployment practices.
  • Ability to connect technical outputs to an operator's actual question.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States and U.S. citizenship.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Top Secret / TS/SCI clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting special operations, deployed technical teams, wireless reconnaissance, or expeditionary communications; equivalent civilian experience is welcome.
  • Experience with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth security, cellular technologies, software-defined radio, embedded Linux, or resource-constrained computing.
  • Applied machine learning and local inference experience supported by practical implementation.
  • A background as a cyber operator who builds tools, or as a security engineer with operational experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, integrate, and improve modular tools for wireless survey, reconnaissance, device and network enumeration, technical characterization, and operator-directed access workflows.
  • Turn scripts and prototypes into reliable capabilities that other users can employ.
  • Configure, deploy, and support Linux-based sensors, edge compute, communications links, and remote operator interfaces.
  • Validate systems in disconnected, bandwidth-constrained, and resource-limited environments.
  • Support mission preparation, customer engagements, exercises, trials, and authorized operational activity; help employ systems appropriately and communicate their limitations.
  • Develop workflows for ingesting, normalizing, storing, retrieving, and correlating wireless observations, device telemetry, and network state.
  • Build and evaluate analytics and AI capabilities that help operators characterize devices, correlate observations, recognize changes, and reduce manual analysis.
  • Assess model accuracy, confidence, latency, and edge-compute requirements before operational use.
  • Integrate sensors, software modules, APIs, databases, and command-and-control components.
  • Diagnose failures across software, operating systems, networking, and hardware interfaces, and work with the engineering team to resolve underlying causes.
  • Capture operational observations, technical failures, and customer problems; convert them into tested improvements, reusable tooling, deployment procedures, and documentation.
