About The Position

This position coordinates the design, planning, evaluation, and integration of clinical education and professional development activities to maintain consistent standards of practice and competencies in patient care delivery. The role supports the unit leadership team through effective leadership, communication, and conflict resolution. Key responsibilities include conducting rounds, reviewing OR schedules for specific case needs, expediting first case on-time starts and room turnovers, updating surgeon preference cards, participating in capital equipment planning, and partnering with various departments to ensure patient care needs are met. The coordinator also monitors vendors, participates in inventory management, facilitates nursing unit education plans, defines orientation and staff development needs, creates staff schedules, supports department compliance initiatives, and collaborates on developing unit standards and policies. Additionally, the role involves supporting OR staffing needs in a Clinical RN capacity (scrub or circulating) as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing with two (2) years in area of practice OR Associate's degree in Nursing with four (4) years in area of practice.
  • Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
  • Possesses interpersonal skills to positively and effectively communicate written and verbally, negotiate, and resolve conflict. Demonstrating expert team-building skills.
  • Has the motivation and drive for continuous development of self.
  • Uses competent clinical practice and critical thinking skills to efficiently deliver patient care with all health care providers while maximizing efficient use of resources.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts initial and on-going rounds throughout the day communicating with charge RNs, OR control desk, staff members, and surgeons to ensure cases proceed as planned.
  • Reviews OR schedule minimally one week in advance for specific case needs-including potential staff training needs, equipment, implants, and other specialty items.
  • Expedites first case on-time starts and room turnover striving to meet all OR efficiency and quality benchmarks.
  • Updates surgeon preference cards/instrumentation trays and actively participates in the annual capital equipment planning process including the acquisition of quotes.
  • Partners with SPD, Supply Chain Operations, nursing departments, and physician offices to ensure patient care needs are met.
  • Following Healthcare Industry Representative and policies/procedures, monitors vendors in the patient care areas through coordination with Allied.
  • Participates in inventory management by adjusting PAR levels, monitoring for expired products, revising custom packs, and performing value analysis functions seeking potential cost savings/containment.
  • In collaboration with leaders, facilitates the nursing unit’s education plan for nursing orientation, staff development, continuing education, competency validation, patient education, and academic experiences.
  • Defines and coordinates orientation and staff development needs for all service line employees. Individualizes orientation/development, evaluates progress through goal setting, and conducts probationary/annual evaluations including the creation and monitoring of performance action plans. Ensures annual staff competencies and skills to fulfill service expectations.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of service line staffing plan and required FTEs to match service block scheduling so as to monthly create a working staff service line schedule.
  • Supports department compliance initiatives including the prep for regulatory surveys.
  • Collaborates with managers to develop unit standards, policies, procedures, protocols, documentation, forms, and performance monitoring tools.
  • Participates in meeting the Goals and Objectives of Perioperative Services and ensures the department contributes to the attainment of the hospital’s goals.
  • Role models and follows all WVU Medicine’s Standards of Behavior.
  • Supports OR staffing needs in Clinical RN capacity (scrub or circulating) dependent on case.
