About The Position

The Cutter Grinder Machinist will operate grinding machines to produce cutting tools to established blueprint and engineering specifications. Selects, mounts, attaches, and calibrates a variety of attachments to grind angles, contours, lines, spheres, etc. on to surfaces. The Cutter Grinder Position is responsible for performing precision smoothing, sharpening, polishing, or grinding of cutting tools. Make or modify cutting tools from blueprints or written instruction. Modify tooling, cutters, cutter holders, arbors, etc.

Requirements

  • Strong work ethic: Willing to work OT to meet tight deadlines regularly.
  • Tolerance: Ability to machine parts to +/- 0.0005”
  • Basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing , and Basic Math, Shop Math, Basic Blueprint, Intermediate Blueprint and/or Math for Machinists, Blueprint Reading for Machinists, (Measurement Skills for Manufacturing)
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, or walk the duration of the shift, 8-10 hours.
  • Occasionally required to lift, push, or pull up to 30 lbs.
  • Regularly exposed to moving machine parts when in the plant.
  • Due to ITAR regulations, only U.S. persons—defined as U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders), and U.S. nationals—are eligible for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Sharpening of special tools using various grinders to include (but not limited to): Fairly complex form tools, milling cutters, end mills, etc.
  • Abrasive wheel selection, setup, and dressing.
  • Determines proper clearances, reliefs, and geometry.
  • Inspection on floor.
  • Ability to read blueprints for information.
  • Visually and dimensionally inspects production parts for any defects and report defects to immediate supervisor.
  • Machine startup: adjusts tooling to maintain proper sizes, replaces broken or worn tooling.
  • Understands and observes all necessary safety procedures: safety glasses, shoes, ear protection, machine interlocks, lifting guidelines, etc. as designated in specific work area assigned.
  • Operates production machinery to print specifications.
  • Verify conformance of workpiece to specifications, using measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and go-no-go gauges and optical comparators.
  • Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Reads and interprets the Job Traveler for such information as the number of workpieces to be machined, sequence of operation, etc...
  • Understands and follows Prince Industries quality certifications (i.e., ISO, AS) as relates to position.
  • Completes necessary job-related paperwork to include tags, inspection documents, and production grinding room log.
  • Sorts, marks, or tags finished work.
  • Cleans all spills and noticeable grease spots on floor in shop.
  • Observes daily preventative machine maintenance: proper coolant levels, filters, fan operation, cleans machine, etc.
  • Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions, such as worn or damaged cutting tools, etc.
  • Positions and secures workpiece in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers, or fixtures.
  • Maintains good housekeeping in work area.
  • Works under direct supervision.
  • Works effectively with all department personnel and co-workers in a harmonious and cooperative manner to meet the needs and goals established by the company.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
