About The Position

Under immediate supervision of the Central Evening & Weekend Supervisor, provides basic library services to customers; performs circulation functions; assists with collection development and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to meet and serve the public in person & over the telephone, working effectively with customers of all ages.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies, including the ability to work with computers in a Windows environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level. Ability to work at a counter used for customer interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize personal work routines effectively.
  • Excellent physical stamina; many duties performed while standing; ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Demonstrated intermediate computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide service in a values-based environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide service in a courteous, friendly, efficient manner.
  • Minimum of three years of customer service experience.
  • Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages used in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic circulation and registration services: checks materials in and out; promotes library services during customer interactions & assists customers in locating library materials, services & programs; registers borrowers and computer users; collects fines and fees; updates customer records; verbally explains library practices and procedures; resolves customer complaints; processes customer requests for holds; makes efficient use of referrals.
  • Performs circulation and registration services support tasks to maintain dependable circulation and computer use records: enters customer and title information; performs circulation control duties.
  • Discharges/re-sensitizes returns and processes in-transit materials; sorts and shelves new material and discharged material; files reserves; retrieves closed stack material; assists with collection weeding and inventory.
  • Resolves customer problems with equipment; provides simple machine maintenance as needed.
  • Assists in collection development/promotion and maintenance, creates displays.
  • Lifts and routes materials, which may weigh up to 10 pounds, from book bins and shelves.
  • Provides patron recommendations. Recommends viewing and music options to patrons.
  • Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.
