About The Position

Dominion Energy is seeking a Customer Projects Designer to join their Electric Distribution Design team. This role involves a blend of in-office and external field assignments, contributing to the design of power solutions for local residences and the community. The position can be filled at the entry, mid, or senior level, with increasing complexity of assignments, expectations, and responsibilities based on the level. The role is customer-oriented, involving engineering technical electric distribution solutions, project management of 50-100 projects from inception to completion, and communication with internal and external customers. Designers are the assigned point of contact for the customer and participate in a 2-year electric distribution designer training program. Responsibilities include inspecting project sites, designating facility placement, determining metering requirements, preparing service agreements and detailed drawings using tools like Arc-FM and Auto-Cad, analyzing electrical load data, performing calculations, preparing cost estimates, coordinating with other utilities, securing permits and easements, reconciling as-builts for GIS accuracy, identifying safety issues, assisting in storm restoration, and resolving customer issues. Higher levels (II and III) are expected to handle more complex assignments and demonstrate leadership/mentorship. The role has a three-year commitment: two years of training plus one year in the field post-training. Performance is evaluated through written, field, and instructor/leader assessments. Work location may be adjusted based on business needs.

Requirements

  • Customer Project Designer I: 0 - 2+ years directly related experience.
  • Basic knowledge of electric distribution design, electricity, company policies and procedures, and mainframe and personal computer (for Designer I).
  • Skills: verbal, written and interpersonal communication; time management and organization; project management; math and technical aptitude.
  • Abilities: effectively interact with customers and team members; detail oriented.
  • Physical attributes to perform essential function: walking, climbing, stooping, bending and prolonged standing.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive.
  • Customer Project Designer II: 2 - 3+ years directly related experience.
  • Successful completion of the Customer Projects Designer Development Program or previous external experience demonstrating knowledge of fundamental overhead and commercial design (for Designer II).
  • Knowledge of distribution design, electricity, company policies and procedures (for Designer II).
  • Demonstrated leadership ability (for Designer II).
  • Customer Project Designer III: 5+ years directly related experience.
  • Knowledge of distribution design, electricity, company policies and procedures and mainframe and personal computer (for Designer III).
  • Abilities: effectively interact with customers; teaming; detail oriented (for Designer III).
  • A partial year of experience of 6 months or more will be rounded to one year of experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of the Customer Projects Designer Development Program (internal) or comparable development program (external) (preferred for Designer III).

Responsibilities

  • Engineer technical electric distribution solutions by applying principles to account for equipment and labor.
  • Project manage approximately 50-100 projects from inception to completion.
  • Design power solutions for local residences and the community.
  • Communicate company policy and procedures, electric service requirements, and project schedules and status to internal and external customers.
  • Represent the Company as the assigned point of contact for the customer throughout the design process.
  • Participate in the 2-year electric distribution designer training program.
  • Inspect project sites, designate facility placement, and determine metering requirements.
  • Prepare service agreements and detailed drawings utilizing Arc-FM, Auto-Cad, or other tools.
  • Analyze electrical load data and perform calculations to determine size and location of electric distribution facilities.
  • Utilize work management system to prepare cost estimates.
  • Coordinate installation/relocation of other utilities.
  • Prepare underground agreements, billing authorities, revenue calculations, and negotiate/secure Right-of-Way permits, environmental permits, easement agreements, and highway/railroad permits.
  • Reconcile construction field adjustments (as-builts) to ensure mapping accuracy in the Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Identify safety issues, check equipment and work area regularly, and evaluate impact of decisions on safety.
  • Assist in storm restoration processes by driving, patrolling, scouting damage locations, and digitally obtaining information.
  • Assist in customer issue resolutions and regulatory inquiries.
  • Work more complex design assignments and demonstrate leadership and mentorship abilities (for Designer II/III levels).
