About The Position

Under the supervision of the Building Manager or Custodial Supervisor, the Custodian performs a variety of tasks in the cleaning, sanitation, and general upkeep of school buildings and grounds. This role is crucial for maintaining a safe, healthy, and attractive environment for students, staff, and visitors. The Custodian is responsible for ensuring that all assigned areas are clean and orderly, and that equipment and supplies are used efficiently and safely.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to operate and maintain cleaning equipment.
  • Must be able to safely use cleaning chemicals.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous custodial or janitorial experience.
  • Experience working in a school environment.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance and repair tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and polishing floors, walls, windows, and furniture.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, and floors, and restock supplies like soap and paper towels.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles throughout the building and transport waste to designated disposal areas.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, tightening screws, and reporting any needed repairs to the supervisor.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of assigned areas, including classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, and common areas.
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment, such as floor buffers, scrubbers, and vacuum cleaners, ensuring they are in good working condition.
  • Assist with setting up and taking down furniture for special events or meetings as needed.
  • Follow safety procedures and guidelines for the use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Report any safety hazards, security concerns, or maintenance issues to the supervisor promptly.
  • Perform groundskeeping duties as assigned, such as sweeping walkways, picking up litter, and maintaining the appearance of exterior areas.
