About The Position

The City of Oxnard's Public Works Department is seeking a Custodian who is highly motivated, takes initiative, and has excellent oral and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will have previous custodial experience, the ability to work independently, and, as a team member, have a positive attitude, excellent customer service, and interpersonal skills.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of custodial experience.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with ongoing work.
  • Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

Responsibilities

  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, strip, seal, wax, and buff floors.
  • Operate a variety of cleaning equipment (e.g., carpet extractors, slow and high-speed buffers).
  • Clean, scrub and disinfect restrooms, showers and related areas, including toilets, urinals, sinks and other bathroom fixtures.
  • Maintain security of buildings by locking/unlocking doors, windows, gates, and setting alarms; raise/lower the flag as assigned.
  • Polish and clean furniture, wash walls and windows, clean stairwells, elevators, breakrooms, conference rooms, empty trash and recycling, and dust.
  • Demonstrate a full understanding of policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties.
  • Maintain logs, supply lists, and report any maintenance issues in a timely manner.
  • Routine coverage of city buildings when needed.
  • Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance and operations work in support of City departments or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools, supplies and equipment for assignment; performs work following established safety policies and procedures.
  • Operates and maintains assigned equipment, tools and supplies; performs basic inspections to ensure safe operating conditions; cleans and performs preventative maintenance; and monitors need for replacement or advanced repair/maintenance work.
  • Plans, monitors, and reviews inventory and supply needs; places orders or requests based on requirements.
  • Maintains activity logs, records, work orders, and related reports.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
  • Emptying trash and recycling containers; Cleaning and sanitation of restrooms; Polishing and maintenance of fixtures and furniture; Stripping/waxing floors; Shampooing carpet; Attending to unplanned spills and clean-up tasks; Opening and securing buildings; Setting up and taking down flags; Maintaining logs and reporting maintenance issues.
