About The Position

Custodian Full Time Position Overview A Custodian performs routine manual tasks involving the custodial care and cleaning of public buildings. This work includes performing cleaning and minor maintenance tasks in an assigned building or building area. Primary responsibilities are to use proper methods, materials and equipment in cleaning and attending to the neatness and sanitation of buildings and/or equipment. An employee in this class works under close supervision, and activities follow a well-established routine. Taylor, Director Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities About the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities The mission of the department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public spaces, cultural activities, and programming. The Department’s vision is to improve the well-being of every person in our community by connecting them to each other and their environment. The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment
  • Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of surfaces
  • Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions
  • Ability to operate powered automatic scrubbers, buffers, and sweepers as required
  • Ability to work safely without hazard to self and/or others
  • Sufficient physical strength to withstand the strain of working long hours in performing cleaning work.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years prior experience in janitorial or related custodial work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Prior training in the following areas: Green Seal Cleaning Standards; Bloodborne Pathogens; First Aid and CPR.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans, sanitizes and deodorizes restrooms and replenishes supplies.
  • Dusts and cleans offices and polishes furniture.
  • Empties waste cans; Returns trash bins to the appropriate area after trash pickup.
  • Loads and unloads large shipments of supplies.
  • Maintains a variety of cleaning equipment.
  • Maintains immediate outdoor areas by removing debris, leaves, snow and salts sidewalks, operates small leaf and snow blowers
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs
  • Prepares rooms for meetings; helps move office and building furniture and equipment.
  • Replaces light bulbs, cleans and polishes brass, and unstops lavatories.
  • Reports damaged fixtures, supply needs, more difficult and major repairs.
  • Serves as an ambassador for exceptional customer experiences, interactions and services for customers and fellow employees.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, buffs, and waxes floors.
  • Performs related work as required.
