About The Position

The Veterans Transition Center of California (VTC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering veterans to move from crisis to self-sufficiency through housing, supportive services, and advocacy. This Custodian position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the facility, including indoor and outdoor areas, and managing cleaning supplies and equipment.

Requirements

  • Physical endurance and strength to perform repetitive tasks and lift heavy objects.
  • Attention to detail and diligence in cleaning and maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and safety.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor or Director.
  • Good communication skills for reporting issues and interacting with staff or visitors in a calm, clear, and respectful manner.
  • Employees are expected to be present during standard operating hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).
  • Personal appointments should be scheduled outside of standard operating hours whenever possible.
  • Provide two weeks' notice prior to all anticipated absences.
  • 80% of time spent cleaning Martinez Hall & completing bedroom turnovers in all housing units on Hayes Circle.
  • 20% of time spent on yard/outdoor maintenance.
  • All cleaning must be thorough, sanitary, and result in a pleasant smell.
  • Expected to work alongside Work Alternative Program, Community Service & Volunteer workers.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Work Alternative Program, Community Service & Volunteer workers.
  • Perform cleaning and sanitation duties, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming floors, cleaning windows, mirrors, partitions, dusting furniture and walls, and cleaning/sanitizing restrooms.
  • Collect and dispose of trash, recycling, and other waste materials.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and basic repairs, and report larger maintenance issues.
  • Maintain outdoor areas, including mowing lawns, trimming trees, raking leaves, and keeping sidewalks clear.
  • Monitor and maintain cleaning supplies and equipment, ensuring availability and proper use.
  • Follow procedures for chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage and ensure safety.
  • Occasionally inspect fire alarms, heating/cooling systems, and other safety equipment.
  • Perform monthly cleaning of each fleet vehicle.
  • Other duties as assigned.
