About The Position

The Custodian performs a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, keeping them in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role also involves performing other tasks related to the area of assignment.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of janitorial work operations.
  • Basic knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Basic knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered equipment.
  • Ability to lift/carry 1-30 lbs of equipment, supplies, or trash.
  • Ability to push/pull using both hands and arms while performing cleaning duties, exerting 5-35 lbs of force.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders while cleaning upper areas and drapes.
  • Ability to bend/twist/balance at the waist, knees, and neck throughout the shift.
  • Ability to kneel/crouch/crawl while cleaning lower areas or retrieving supplies from lower shelves.
  • Ability to reach, handle, grasp, and finger while operating equipment, using hand and power tools, wiping and cleaning surfaces, and using cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to perform overhead reaching throughout the shift.
  • Adequate sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination for operating equipment and tool use.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, starting in a counter-clockwise direction around the room, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height such as lights above doors, curtain tips, vents, and ledges.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height using a germicidal solution, working in a counter-clockwise direction. This includes cleaning ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans.
  • Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls using the proper solution.
  • Spot clean windows using the proper solution.
  • Clean bathrooms using a germicidal solution, wiping down the sink, toilet seat, and the outside of the toilet bowl. Clean the inside of the toilet with a Johnnie Mop and germicidal solution, paying attention to the rim.
  • Check and clean soap dispensers and paper dispensers daily, refilling as needed.
  • Empty trash cans, removing the liner and wiping the can if liquid is present, then placing a clean liner.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors, starting at the back of the room and working towards the door using an “S” stroke to catch dust. Dust under all furniture and in restrooms.
  • Clean outside areas by emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks, flower beds, and curb lines for trash and cigarette butts.
  • Spot clean spills on sidewalks and remove gum with a scraper.
  • Wipe down benches, vending machines, and lower window ledges.
  • Perform high dusting for dust and cobwebs in outside areas.
  • Clean public area glass as necessary.
  • Police parking lots for trash.
  • Dust mop and spot mop main hallways.
  • Clean public area glass several times during the day.
  • Clean planters, ensuring they are free from bird waste inside and out.
  • Check for cobwebs and perform high dusting of window areas at least twice a week.
  • Check all corners and edges for dirt, cobwebs, and other foreign debris.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, placing chairs back under tables.
  • Spot clean spills in the food court.
  • Empty and clean trash cans in the food court.
  • Remove accumulated dirty trays to the washroom, clean them using a tray power washer, and stack clean trays for recycled use.
  • Police outside eating areas in the food court.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, starting at the back of the room and mopping under furniture and behind doors as backing out.
  • Mentally review cleaning steps and visually check furniture placement after completing a room, making corrections as needed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, along with high dusting.
  • Interact with customers in a friendly and cheerful manner, answering questions courteously or referring them to someone who can assist.
  • Report anything broken or out of order to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and speak quietly, trying to reduce or eliminate noise.
  • Stay in the assigned work area unless requested to go elsewhere by the supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance while on the job.
  • Report to the supervisor if the work assignment is not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Be courteous at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed by the supervisor and/or Account Manager, which may include floor care (stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrubbing and buffing of floors).
