About The Position

We provide safe, clean, and supportive shelter environments for 600 men and women overcoming homelessness in Downtown Phoenix. We are seeking a dedicated Custodian to help maintain a clean, sanitary, and welcoming environment for our residents. This is a physically demanding, hands-on role requiring reliability, attention to detail, and a positive, can-do attitude. The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of our non-congregate shelter, including dorms, showers, offices, and communal spaces. This role requires working in both men’s and women’s occupied dorms and handling biohazard materials (urine, feces, vomit, occasional blood) using proper PPE. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced environments and understands the importance of creating a safe, clean, and dignified space for residents.

Requirements

  • Ability to work flexible hours between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM, including varied days of the week
  • Reliable, dependable, and punctual
  • Positive, “get it done” attitude with strong work ethic
  • Comfortable with physically demanding tasks and biohazard cleanup
  • Ability to lift up to 80 pounds
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness
  • Must be able to lift, bend, and move heavy cleaning equipment up to 80 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a shelter, healthcare, nursing home, or skilled nursing environment is highly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize dorms, bathrooms, showers, and communal areas
  • Perform biohazard cleanup with appropriate PPE
  • Sweep, mop, dust, polish windows, clean cabinets, and maintain office areas
  • Monitor and restock cleaning supplies as needed
  • Ensure all tasks are completed efficiently, thoroughly, and according to schedule
  • Adapt to daily operational needs and pitch in wherever necessary
  • Follow all safety and infection control protocols
