About The Position

The YMCA of Indiana County is looking for a dependable and detail-oriented Custodian to help maintain a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for our members, participants, guests, and staff. Under the direction of the Lead Custodian, this position performs routine custodial, housekeeping, and light facility maintenance duties throughout the YMCA and surrounding grounds. The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, works well independently and as part of a team, and demonstrates the YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff, members, guests, and vendors.
  • Basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform physical tasks including bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, climbing, and twisting.
  • Ability to frequently push, pull, and move custodial equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely use ladders and work at varying heights.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
  • FBI Fingerprint Clearance through the Department of Human Services
  • Pennsylvania State Police PATCH
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance
  • Mandated Reporter training
  • Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification (due within 90 days of hire)

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or facility maintenance experience
  • Knowledge of proper cleaning procedures, sanitation practices, and safe chemical handling
  • Experience operating custodial equipment and hand tools
  • Ability to identify and communicate maintenance concerns

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and appearance of assigned YMCA facilities and grounds.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, showers, common areas, and other high-use areas.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and disinfect floors, furniture, equipment, and other surfaces.
  • Empty trash and recycling and properly dispose of waste.
  • Replenish restroom and facility supplies.
  • Perform floor care including scrubbing, buffing, stripping, waxing, and carpet extraction.
  • Clean windows, mirrors, walls, doors, and other interior and accessible exterior surfaces.
  • Safely operate custodial equipment including vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, extractors, pressure washers, ladders, and hand tools.
  • Set up and tear down rooms for meetings, classes, programs, and special events.
  • Move furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed.
  • Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and facility issues promptly.
  • Respond to spills, weather-related incidents, and other facility emergencies.
  • Follow YMCA, OSHA, and facility safety procedures, including proper chemical handling and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Assist with inventory and proper storage of custodial supplies.
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform additional custodial and facility-related duties as assigned.
