About The Position

Lyon County is seeking a full-time Custodian. This non-exempt position involves the general upkeep of Lyon County buildings, including exteriors, interiors, entrances, and hallways, to keep the facility clean and in an orderly condition. The duties performed will be skilled and semi-skilled. This role requires maintaining a positive work atmosphere, being pleasant, respectful, and civil, maintaining composure, and being reliable and dependable. The job description may be revised to comply with laws and departmental needs.

Requirements

  • Requires current Class C driver's license.
  • Must have the ability to receive, interpret and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Required to read, write and speak English.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical manuals relative to facilities maintenance.
  • Ability to write reports and respond to Facility Work Orders.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions and report to supervisor.
  • The ability to communicate with the public in an effective manner.
  • Ability to establish a working relationship with other county and municipal offices.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and precisely, orally and in writing is essential.
  • Must pass pre-employment testing including physical, drug test, and background check.
  • Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
  • Infrequently required to climb or balance.
  • Required to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, frequently lift 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distant vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, night vision and the ability to adjust and focus.
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior related experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to speak a foreign language helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that employee gets along with customers, citizens, coworkers, and management.
  • Be pleasant, respectful, and civil with others on the job and display a good-natured, cooperative attitude.
  • Maintain composure, keep emotions in check, control anger, and avoid aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.
  • Be reliable, responsible, dependable, and fulfill duties.
  • Show up for work on a regular and predictable basis as scheduled.
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, and vacuum hallways, stairs, office spaces, etc.
  • Strip and refinish floors on all levels, and clean carpet as needed.
  • Open and secure the facility.
  • Clean glass doors, windows, window blinds, window casings and wood fixtures, stair railings, etc.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms, drinking fountains, furniture, fixtures such as stair casings, baseboards, and ledges.
  • Empty all waste into proper containers for pick-up.
  • Notify supervisor of the need for maintenance on items found while working.
  • Notify supervisor of cleaning supplies needed and keep an inventory of supplies on hand sufficient to perform the job.
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Learn to follow safety rules and regulations while maintaining a safe and clean environment.
