About The Position

The Custodian is responsible for cleaning and performing routine housekeeping and maintenance of district buildings to provide a safe and clean learning environment. This role involves a variety of tasks to ensure the upkeep of school facilities.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform each job function in an efficient and compliant manner.
  • High school degree, or equivalent.
  • 1 to 2 years of relevant experience preferred, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Commercial cleaning experience preferred.
  • Experience waxing and stripping floors, using a scrubber, floor buffer, commercial vacuum, and other floor machines also preferred.
  • Knowledge and skill related to routine housekeeping and maintenance work.
  • Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
  • Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
  • Good basic mathematical skills including ability to perform operations using units of weight measurement, volume and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently, and effectively with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Clean floors: vacuum, sweep, dust mop, wash, strip, wax, and buff.
  • Wash and clean windows, walls, chalkboards, trashcans, water fountains, and sinks.
  • Dust furniture, fixtures, and woodwork.
  • Empty trash receptacles and pick up litter in and around buildings.
  • Clean and stock bathrooms.
  • Change and clean shower curtains.
  • Scrub and disinfect shower rooms.
  • Maintain and clean displays, boards, artwork, frames, and displays.
  • Perform light repairs as needed.
  • Provide setup and breakdown of furniture for events in various spaces like the cafeteria, gymnasium, or auditorium.
  • Troubleshoot minor maintenance problems and handle minor repairs directly.
  • Refer carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs to maintenance staff as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for closing the building daily, ensuring all doors and windows are secured and lights are off.
  • Maintain the American flag on an as-needed basis.
  • Perform minor routine maintenance on electrical components (e.g., replace light bulbs), heating and ventilating vents and fixtures (e.g., changing filters), locks (e.g., oiling), and lockers.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities by reporting known safety hazards to the supervisor immediately.
  • Monitor building and grounds to ensure cleanliness and safety standards are maintained.
  • Provide routine grass trimming, leaf raking, and maintenance of planting beds.
  • Remove snow from immediate walks and exits and apply sand and salt as needed.
  • Be available to support students and staff during evacuation drills and emergencies.
  • Notify supervisor when away from the premises.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to state, federal, and district policies.
