About The Position

Under general supervision, performs the full range of custodial duties related to the care and cleaning of assigned buildings and facilities. This is an entry-level position in which incumbents are expected to learn and perform the full scope of assigned custodial duties at various City locations. Receives general supervision and direction from Public Works Supervisor or other assigned supervisor. Does not exercise supervision over other staff.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience performing custodial duties.
  • Possession of a valid class C California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of customer service.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, and methods of custodial maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices; proper disposal of hazardous materials; the use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of recordkeeping and reporting procedures.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety measures appropriate to work performed.
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment such as a vacuum, carpet cleaner, and floor buffer.
  • Ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time and bend, stoop, climb, lift, carry, and move furniture and equipment as necessary to perform duties.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use proper English, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain courteous, cooperative, and effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment within established guidelines.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with a minimum amount of on-site supervision.
  • Ability to serve as emergency services worker in the event of an emergency.
  • Skill to safely and effectively operate a variety of cleaning equipment.
  • Skill to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize rest room facilities and fixtures including sinks, urinals and toilets; replenish supplies in rest rooms.
  • Clean and sanitize meeting rooms, break rooms, locker rooms, and workout facility including sinks, showers, countertops, tables, chairs, benches, and fitness equipment.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip, and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets and rugs.
  • Dust and polish furniture, woodwork, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Wash windows, mirrors, doors, and walls.
  • Empty, clean and sanitize waste receptacles.
  • Clean ceiling light fixtures; clean and adjust shades and blinds.
  • Travel to and from various City facilities in a safe and timely manner.
  • Secure facilities after use by ensuring doors and equipment are locked and turned off.
  • Clean City facilities after meetings and/or events.
  • May assist with meeting and/or event set up.
  • Maintain cleaning supply inventory.
  • Report the need for maintenance and repair, including damage or unsafe conditions to assigned supervisor.
  • Establish positive working relationships with the public and co-workers, representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
