About The Position

Under general supervision, performs manual and custodial work. Generally assigned to clean and upkeep a specific County building. This role involves a variety of routine manual tasks in the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of buildings and equipment. The Custodian is expected to represent Johnson County professionally and maintain an inventory of custodial supplies. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to manage time independently are crucial. The position requires performing manual cleaning tasks, occasional moderately heavy manual labor, and various physical movements such as standing, sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, bending, twisting, reaching, and crawling. The role also involves occasional outdoor work in various weather conditions and the use of a computer for email and internet.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in custodial work such as vacuums and buffers
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and standards relating to custodial maintenance
  • Knowledge of English language to include basic grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation
  • Ability to perform a variety of routine manual tasks in the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of buildings and equipment
  • Ability to represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner
  • Ability to maintain an inventory of custodial supplies and make recommendations for procurement of supplies
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of information as appropriate
  • Ability to be detailed-oriented while performing duties
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and members of the public
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to follow and interpret basic instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, and schedule form

  • Ability to have sufficient vision which permits light production, review of materials in hardcopy form, and adequate performance of duties in a safe and appropriate manner
  • Ability to have sufficient manual dexterity to perform routine cleaning duties and make handwritten notations
  • Ability to have sufficient personal mobility to occasionally complete field work at various county facilities
  • Ability to occasionally work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to manage own time and work independently to complete daily duties
  • Ability to work flexible schedule and occasional overtime as needed
  • Eighth grade or equivalent AND 6 months of custodial/maintenance experience; OR any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Must pass background check.

Responsibilities

  • Sweep, mop, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors in hallways, lobbies, offices, etc.
  • Wash sinks, mirrors, shelves, windows, walls, and blinds.
  • Disinfect high touch surfaces such as handrails, counters, drinking fountains, door knobs, etc.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms and replace supplies.
  • Dust and wash furniture and fixtures.
  • Help move furniture and other heavy objects.
  • Prepare rooms for meetings as requested.
  • Vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets.
  • Empty wastebaskets / ashtrays.
  • Carry out and properly dispose of garbage / trash.
  • Collect, sort, and dispose of recyclable materials in appropriate location.
  • Perform routine maintenance on cleaning equipment.
  • Notify supervisor of inventory and maintenance needs.
  • Occasionally perform routine grounds work, including picking up trash and shoveling snow.
  • Secure and open facilities as needed.
  • Perform duties at other County buildings as needed.
  • Participate in training and work related meetings as requested.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.
