About The Position

Under the supervision of the Facilities Supervisor and immediate work direction of a Lead Custodian, perform a variety of custodial duties related to maintaining assigned rooms, buildings, facilities and related areas in a clean, orderly and safe condition. Incumbents assigned to the Custodian classification perform varied custodial duties related to maintaining District facilities in a clean, orderly and safe condition. Incumbents assigned to the Lead Custodian classification oversee and provide work direction and guidance to assigned custodians and participate in a variety of custodial duties to ensure that District facilities are maintained in a clean, orderly and safe condition.

Requirements

• Knowledge in the use of cleaning agents including solvents, disinfectants, detergents and polishing agents is required.
• Past experience in standard custodial practices, procedures and techniques in an organization with extended hours of operation and multiple high-traffic areas is required.
• A valid California driver's license is required.
• Ability to read and interpret specification, instructions and procedures.
• Ability to effectively discuss work and respond to questions from co-workers and supervisors.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
• Ability to perform these operations using units of weight and volume measurement to mix cleaning agents.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions.
• Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional variables.
• Employment is contingent upon possessing and maintaining a valid California Driver's License.
• This position may require operating a District or personal vehicle in order to complete assigned work within the scope of the position duties.
• Demonstrate knowledge of: Modern cleaning methods, materials and equipment used in custodial work
• Operation and care of vacuums, buffers and other electrical cleaning equipment.
• Health and safety regulations.
• Clean assigned rooms, buildings, facilities and related areas.
• Sweep, scrub, mop, wax, oil, buff and seal floors.
• Vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets.
• Dust, wash and polish furniture, woodwork and metal work.
• Wash windows, walls and mirrors.
• Clean chalkboards and erasers.
• Clean restroom sinks, toilets, shower facilities and locker rooms.
• Fill paper and soap dispensers.
• Empty and clean waste receptacles.
• Quickly learn the schedules, procedures and cleaning supplies for custodial work.
• Operate hand and power cleaning equipment.
• Maintain a pattern of reliable attendance and work performance.
• Perform assigned work within established time schedule.
• Requisition supplies from warehouse stores.
• Work with minimum supervision.
• Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
• Demonstrate a sensitivity to relate to persons with diverse socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including the disabled.
• Observe health and safety rules and regulations.
• Stand for long periods of time.
• Walk at a normal pace for extended periods of time.
• Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.

Responsibilities

• Working from a prepared work schedule, perform a variety of custodial duties related to maintaining assigned rooms, buildings, facilities and related areas in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
• Sweep, scrub, wax, oil, buff and seal floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets.
• Dust, wash and polish furniture, woodwork and metal work; wash windows, walls and mirrors; clean chalkboards and erasers.
• Clean restroom sinks and toilets; clean shower facilities and locker rooms as assigned; fill paper and soap dispensers; empty and clean waste receptacles.
• Perform minor non-technical repairs such as replacing light bulbs and tubes, adjusting desks and other furniture and adjusting shades and blinds.
• Assist in preparing and setting up facilities for meetings and special events; unlocks and lock doors to buildings; move, arrange and remove furniture, staging, bleachers and equipment; set-up sound equipment for classrooms or special usage; clean facilities after events.
• Pick up trash from grounds and exterior areas; empty garbage and trash cans; operate a utility cart and/or pick-up truck to deliver or pick up supplies or equipment and to collect trash; may assist in receiving, storing and inventorying supplies.
• Report safety or security issues to Lead Custodian or supervisor.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
