About The Position

The Custodian under direct supervision maintains the cleanliness of facilities and assists with maintenance operations as needed. This is a non-supervisory position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to strong odors, strong and/or toxic chemicals, and to dust. Exposed to outdoors; may be exposed to, slippery or unstable surfaces, and extreme weather conditions. The incumbent may be subject to extended periods of walking, standing, climbing, lifting, carrying, kneeling and/or bending in the completion of work duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and six (6) months experience in janitorial services
  • Knowledge of safety practices
  • Knowledge of custodial materials and equipment, methods, practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of potential hazards of the materials and equipment used in performing assigned tasks
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the performance of simple to moderately complex contract cleaning tasks and projects
  • Ability to perform manipulative tasks requiring eye/hand/foot coordination
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks
  • Ability to communicate with department personnel
  • Ability to read and carry out written instructions
  • Ability to be self-motivated
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted during the course of work
  • Must pass a Criminal Background Check
  • Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance
  • Work well with others and participate fully in a team oriented environment

Responsibilities

  • Completing cleaning schedules, ensuring proper tools, supplies, materials and equipment are ordered/transported to work sites
  • Maintaining cleanliness and disinfecting facility common areas, restrooms, hallways and offices
  • Driving to and from all county buildings, as needed
  • Operating simple to moderately complex equipment, e.g. sweeps, mops, buffs, and vacuums floors
  • Preparing assigned equipment for safe and efficient operating condition by inspecting prior to and after use
  • Performing and scheduling regular and preventive maintenance for equipment under charge
  • Utilizing various cleaning, disinfecting and waxing chemicals and compounds
  • Ensuring a safe work zone by proper use of signage and cleaning chemicals and equipment
  • Ensuring that cleaning supplies are kept in proper supply
  • Vacuuming rugs and carpets; shampoos carpet when necessary
  • Performing recycling; retrieves recyclable items from participating departments
  • Cleaning doors, windows, and walls
  • Cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms
  • Emptying trash
  • Assisting with locating items in inventory and pulling items from inventory
  • Performing setup and takedown of tables and chairs; arranges conference rooms and building lobby special events; moves furniture
  • Providing support to the maintenance mechanic staff; changes light bulbs; changes air filters; hangs pictures
  • Substituting, if assigned, during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations
  • Committing self to providing excellent customer service and demonstrate commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts
  • Creating a high-quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety related training and skills
  • Performing all other duties as assigned
  • Maintaining a safe and healthy work place environment
  • Being available to work non-traditional hours and be on call as necessary on official business
  • Serving as a Disaster Service Worker during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to train on emergency response and/or perform certain emergency services at the direction of their supervisor
