About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families (DCF) is recruiting a Custodian located at our John Dempsey Hospital located in Middletown, CT. This is a part-time position, 34 hours per week, benefit eligible, working the first shift, Monday through Thursday from 7:00 am to 2:30 pm, and Friday from 7:00 am to 1:30 pm. In this role, you will perform custodial tasks and maintenance of various areas including classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms, lavatories, and outdoor areas. Responsibilities include dusting, mopping, sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors, as well as shampooing carpets. You will also wash, dust, and polish glass, woodwork, walls, furniture, and metal equipment. Additionally, you will collect and dispose of trash and recycling, report needs for repairs, perform minor maintenance, and inspect buildings for damage, reporting conditions to your supervisor. The Department of Children and Families (DCF) focuses on working with families and communities to improve child safety, ensure permanent families for children, and advance their overall well-being. DCF protects children from abuse and neglect, strengthens families through support and advocacy, and helps children with emotional and behavioral challenges.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing custodial work in a hospital or institutional setting
  • Experience stripping, waxing and burnishing floors using floor polishers and buffers

  • Experience performing minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work

Responsibilities

  • Perform custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms and lavatories including outdoor areas (i.e. trash around buildings)
  • Dust, mop, sweep, scrub, strip, wax and polish floors, shampoo carpets using appropriate equipment such as floor polishers and buffers
  • Wash, dust and polish glass including windows, woodwork, walls, furniture and metal equipment
  • Collect and dispose of all trash and recycling in the appropriate containers
  • Report needs for repairs
  • Perform minor maintenance
  • Inspect building for damage and report conditions to supervisor
  • Perform related duties as required
  • Makes beds
  • Checks, marks, stores and issues linens, blankets, and clothing (limited to individual’s work area not to include counting and inspection for a larger area)
  • Collects and counts soiled laundry
  • Distributes, empties and sterilizes glassware, wash basins and bedpans
  • Sweeps walks
  • Collects and disposes of trash
  • Runs errands
  • May change light bulbs and replace fuses
  • May lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, cabinets, etc.
  • May replace ceiling or floor tiles
  • May remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways around buildings
  • May sand and salt stairways and walkways
  • May move furniture and/or set-up classrooms
