About The Position

This position is for a CUSTODIAN at OCHS Job Class #7609, 6 hours/260 days. The primary goal of this role is the proper and timely completion of all assigned cleaning, ground care, setup and moving, and painting tasks in accordance with established procedures. The custodian will be responsible for maintaining buildings, locker rooms, and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly, and secure condition. This includes performing routine custodial activities, using cleaning materials and equipment according to standards, and learning appropriate safety precautions. The role also involves performing minor non-technical repairs, observing and reporting maintenance needs, and performing heavy physical labor. The custodian must be able to understand and follow directions, meet schedules, and communicate effectively. Physical requirements include walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and standing for extended periods, as well as working outside under adverse conditions and inside after heating/cooling is turned off. This position also requires working weekend shifts, holidays, and providing "on-call" coverage. The custodian must practice safety precautions and be safety conscious at all times, reporting any maintenance needs or unsafe conditions to their supervisor. Specific tasks include disinfecting and cleaning restrooms, dusting, spot cleaning, collecting trash, vacuuming, mopping, floor refinishing, re-supplying dispensers, and polishing furniture. Operation and maintenance of powered cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers and vacuums are also required, along with non-powered equipment like mops and brooms. Grounds care tasks include mowing, edging, trimming, watering, fertilizing, and applying treatments, as well as picking up trash and cleaning sidewalks. Operation and maintenance of powered grounds care equipment like mowers and blowers are necessary, along with non-powered equipment such as shovels and axes. The role also involves manual labor for moving furniture and equipment, setting up for events, and loading/unloading trucks. Participation in off-shift, weekend, holiday, and "on-call" coverage is required. Demonstrating loyalty and dedication to the Ohio County Schools is expected, along with performing other duties as directed.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED Certificate
Has met health requirements as specified in district personnel policy.
Basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work and routine maintenance.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Proper lifting techniques.

Previous experience as a custodian is desired, though not essential.

Responsibilities

Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain buildings, locker rooms and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition.

Perform cleaning and sanitation tasks in assigned areas in accordance with established procedures. These tasks include, but are not limited to: disinfecting and cleaning restroom fixtures; dusting furniture, window sills and ledges; spot cleaning walls; doors and glass; collecting and removing trash from buildings; emptying ashtrays; vacuuming carpeted areas; dust mopping; wet mopping; spray buffing resilient tile floors; shampooing carpets; stripping and refinishing wood, composition and resilient tile floors; sweeping and mopping concrete and hard surface floors; sweeping and mopping stairs; re-supplying paper and soap dispensers; polishing furniture; replacing burnt out lamps; and other cleaning-related tasks as far as interior work is concerned.
Operates and maintains powered cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbing machines, other automatic scrubbers, wet/dry vacuums, carpet vacuums, carpet shampooers, pile brush vacuums, and pressure washers.
Uses and maintains non-powered cleaning equipment such as mops, brooms, cleaning cloths, spray bottles, brushes and custodial carts.
Performs grounds care tasks in assigned areas in accordance with established procedures. These tasks include, but are not limited to, mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, watering, fertilizing, reseeding, applying fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and sterilants. In addition, performs regular policing tasks such as picking up trash, emptying trash containers, sweeping sidewalks, parking areas, and roadways; cleaning storm drains, catch basins, swales, and unclogging drains if they should become obstructed with trash and debris.
Operates and maintains powered grounds care equipment such as mowers, edgers, trimmers, vacuum machines, blowers, sprayers, spreaders, and saws.
Provides manual labor for a variety of tasks as directed by immediate supervisor. Manual labor tasks include, but are not limited to: moving furniture and equipment; setting up tables, chairs, exhibits and displays; loading and unloading trucks, etc.
Uses and maintains non-powered grounds care equipment such as shovels, axes, slings, hoes, wheelbarrows, saws, trimmers hedge trimmers, trash pickup stick, trash sack or trash container.
Moves office and school furniture and equipment as required to perform assigned cleaning and grounds care work tasks.
Participates in off-shift, weekend, holiday, and "on-call" coverage.
Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Ohio County Schools.
Performs other duties as directed by immediate supervisor.
