About The Position

Since 1973, The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Custodian is a hands-on role that performs regular cleaning duties and is responsible for performing general building and property maintenance according to safety, predictive, and preventative maintenance systems and processes. This is a permanent, full-time position.

Requirements

  • Organized, pro-active and reliable.
  • WHMIS Training is required; ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical labor.
  • A desire to work with marginalized populations.
  • Strong understanding of occupational health & safety as it pertains to facility management.
  • Knowledge of services, equipment, and/or supply ordering and inventory control.
  • Capability of multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient working independently and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal rapport-building skills; experience fostering a cooperative work environment.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • First Aid (Basic or Intermediate) – Level C CPR & AED within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and a child welfare intervention check are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of custodial practices, machinery, and related equipment is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and exceptional cleaning assignments.
  • Ensure safe, effective and sustainable use of all capital assets.
  • Ensure cleaning tasks are done accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform routine maintenance of custodial equipment and ensure proper use of custodial.
  • Ensure secure areas are maintained.
  • Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Assist with snow removal activities as required.
  • Assist in data collection and entry as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
