About The Position

Since 1973, The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Custodian is a hands-on role that performs regular cleaning duties and is responsible for performing general building and property maintenance according to safety, predictive, and preventative maintenance systems and processes. This is a permanent, full-time position.

Requirements

Organized, pro-active and reliable.
WHMIS Training is required; ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
Ability to perform a variety of physical labor.
A desire to work with marginalized populations.
Strong understanding of occupational health & safety as it pertains to facility management.
Knowledge of services, equipment, and/or supply ordering and inventory control.
Capability of multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment.
Proficient working independently and as part of a team
Strong interpersonal rapport-building skills; experience fostering a cooperative work environment.
Strong verbal communication skills.
First Aid (Basic or Intermediate) – Level C CPR & AED within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and a child welfare intervention check are required.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of custodial practices, machinery, and related equipment is an asset.
Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform routine and exceptional cleaning assignments.
Ensure safe, effective and sustainable use of all capital assets.
Ensure cleaning tasks are done accurately and efficiently.
Perform routine maintenance of custodial equipment and ensure proper use of custodial.
Ensure secure areas are maintained.
Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
Assist with snow removal activities as required.
Assist in data collection and entry as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
