About The Position

The custodian/maintenance is responsible for providing the necessary ability to keep assigned buildings clean, safe, functional, and secure in accordance with prescribed codes and established District policies and standards. The role requires adaptability to working around children and adults and maintaining school buildings to acceptable health and safety standards. Basic understanding of school board policies, emergency procedures, public relations, constructive working relationships, and basic building repair knowledge is necessary.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate, maintain, and make adjustments to various types of equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both written and spoken English language.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
  • Ability to accept and learn new processes, technology, or techniques.
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the position.
  • Expectation of continual improvement in skill development through training.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • Must frequently squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.
  • Continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs onto ladders.
  • Frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move 80 pounds.
  • Sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines, etc.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, burnishing, and stripping of hard surface floors.
  • Dust furniture and surfaces.
  • Sanitize locker rooms, restrooms, and drinking fountains daily.
  • Wash windows on both the inside and outside.
  • Empty trash daily.
  • Maintain custodial closet and inventory of custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Restock disposable items and provide inventory usage to Custodial Supervisor.
  • Vacuum carpeted areas daily.
  • Operate custodial equipment as required.
  • Take instructions from Custodial Supervisor verbally or in writing.
  • Prepare and service buildings for events and activities.
  • Clean and maintain assigned space and equipment.
  • Assist visitors with directions and equipment setup.
  • Maintain work-related records and prepare reports.
  • Maintain building and grounds security by securing doors and windows.
  • Perform yard chores such as shoveling snow, salting walks, and waste removal.
  • Make minor building repairs and routine maintenance as directed.
  • Report hazardous conditions and damage to building or grounds immediately.
  • Be on call for emergency needs, overtime, or special needs outside normal working hours.
  • Complete daily work and accommodate students, parents, administrators, and staff.
  • Use ladders and/or man lifts for service work.
  • Project a positive image for Kent ISD.
  • Work closely with supervisors for scheduled and unscheduled events.
  • Perform all duties and procedures within health safety standards as per OSHA and/or MIOSHA.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
