About The Position

The Custodian Substitute will be responsible for maintaining the physical school plant and grounds in excellent condition to ensure the facility is fully operational for educational purposes. This role involves a variety of manual tasks related to cleaning, maintenance, and groundskeeping.

Requirements

• Knowledge and/or ability to obtain and retain knowledge from on the job training regarding methods, materials, and equipment used and safety precautions for custodial work.
• Knowledge of proper use of custodial supplies and techniques for various surfaces.
• Knowledge and/or ability to obtain and retain knowledge from on the job training for the use, operation, and care of custodial equipment.
• Knowledge and/or ability to obtain and retain knowledge from on the job training for the care of buildings and property (grounds, walks, lawns, shrubbery, etc.).
• Skill in the use of hand tools and knowledge of minor adjustments and repair of furniture and building equipment, and changing light bulbs and working electrical systems (for lighting areas).
• Knowledge and/or ability to obtain and retain knowledge from on the job training for fire and accident prevention, including the operation and care of hand extinguishers.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions in English.
• Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships.
• Physical fitness to perform a variety of manual tasks.
• Ability to lift over 40 pounds.
• Ability to go up and down step ladders as necessary.
• Must have neat appearance.
• Must be honest, dependable, respectful and operate with integrity.
• Ability to pay attention to details.
• Physical and mental capabilities to perform the work.
• Physical strength includes but is not limited to, exerting maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing and ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.

Responsibilities

• Participate in activities such as sweeping, dusting, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, polishing and making minor repairs and adjustments as required for the care of various kinds of floors, walls, windows, light fixtures, toilets, washbowls, furniture and other building furnishings and equipment.
• Service, clean and supply restrooms.
• Participate in the activities required for the care and maintenance of the school grounds, including mowing of grass, edging, the sweeping of walks, and the removal of snow and ice.
• Gather and empty trash.
• Responsible for eliminating fire hazards and preventing accidents.
• Takes steps to address safety/security concerns and report as necessary.
• Other duties as assigned by the Principal, Head Custodian and/or Custodial Supervisor.
