About The Position

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing a variety of custodial duties and general care of school building(s) and surrounding grounds to ensure a safe and clean school building for students, staff and community. Essential duties include cleaning assigned areas such as classrooms, halls, offices, restrooms, and cafeterias. This involves vacuuming, shampooing, sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, polishing, mopping, and buffing various floor surfaces. The role also includes washing windows, whiteboards, chalkboards, walls, doors, and baseboards, as well as cleaning and polishing furniture, windows, metal work, and computer screens. Maintaining indoor and outdoor lighting, changing light bulbs, and adjusting clocks are also part of the responsibilities. The custodian will wash, scrub, and disinfect equipment like sinks, fixtures, toilets, showers, panels, and drinking fountains daily. They will clean and sanitize bathrooms, stock bathroom supplies, and clean up spills, including bodily fluids, in a safe and appropriate manner. Setting up, taking down, and moving tables, chairs, equipment, shelving, and partitions for various events and needs is required. Responsibilities extend to removing snow and ice from sidewalks, walkways, and steps. Daily tasks include unlocking and locking buildings, raising and lowering the flag, and preparing buildings for the start and end of the day. Emptying trash and recycling receptacles, cleaning them, and watering plants, cleaning planter boxes, performing minor trimming, and weeding grounds and entryways are also included. The custodian will rearrange and move furnishings, transport and deliver educational supplies, and work cooperatively with other custodial personnel. Reporting safety, sanitary, and fire hazards immediately to the supervisor is crucial. The role requires interacting thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, and parents, and resolving conflict professionally. Maintaining appropriate certifications and training hours, and complying with all applicable laws and regulations are necessary. Attending work regularly and being punctual is expected. Marginal duties include attending in-service trainings and staff meetings, assisting in maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment, and assisting maintenance and grounds keeping departments as needed. Completing logs, forms, and paperwork accurately and reporting issues to authorities are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) or a thorough working knowledge of custodial work, including cleaning methods and materials, and the use of custodial equipment equivalent to that gained in at least one year of experience or a combination of education and experience.
  • Works well with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to interact with students and staff appropriately.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and volume.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use e-mail, internet software, word processing software and other software programs as determined by the District.
  • Ability to appropriately communicate with students and staff.
  • Ability to safely operate a variety of custodial/maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid Card, bloodborne pathogen training, and blood spill training.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working in a sanitation or custodial position preferred.
  • Certificates as determined by the District.

Responsibilities

  • Adjusts clocks, as necessary.
  • Reacts to change in schedule(s) productively.
  • Washes, scrubs and disinfects equipment (i.e. sinks, fixtures, toilets, showers, panels, and drinking fountains, etc.) on a daily basis.
  • Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms and checks and stocks all bathroom supplies.
  • Cleans up spills (including bodily fluids) in a safe and appropriate manner and responds to special requests for custodial services from staff members with supervisor approval.
  • Sets-up, takes down, and moves tables, chairs, equipment, shelving, and partitions for meetings, athletic events, assemblies, and other District needs, as assigned.
  • Removes snow and ice from sidewalks, walkways, and steps, as needed.
  • Unlocks doors and windows, turns on lights, raises flag, and prepares buildings for start of day and/or locks doors, windows and gates, turns off lights, lowers flag, and secures buildings at night.
  • Picks up paper and other debris, empties trash/recycling receptacles and cleans them, as needed.
  • Waters plants, cleans planter boxes, performs minor trimming, and weeding of grounds and entryways.
