About The Position

The University of Southern Mississippi is currently accepting applications for the position of Custodian IV Lead. This role provides leadership, directs, and develops an effective team of custodial personnel in the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of assigned buildings and equipment. The position ensures the completion of all assigned tasks, including those related to football, baseball, work orders, and supply orders.

Requirements

  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or 3 years of related experience in a higher education setting or commercial cleaning environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures, professional standards and regulations, safety requirements, and basic first aid.
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures, and the use of custodial materials, tools, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Skill in managing one's own time and the time of others while monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Skill in the operation of office equipment including, but not limited to, multiline telephone, typewriter, calculator, multi-function printer/copy/scan/fax machine and computer as well as computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
  • Ability to react and respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.
  • Skill in material resources management through obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.
  • Ability to obtain a driver’s license prior to employment.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without the need for visa sponsorship. The University will not sponsor applicants for work visas (e.g., H-1B).

Responsibilities

  • Performs manual cleaning of the assigned building(s) using proper methods and materials.
  • Participates in the care, cleaning, and general housekeeping of assigned buildings, completing tasks including football, baseball, and work orders as assigned.
  • Provides leadership and instruction to small groups of custodians during scheduled work periods (including weekends) or special cleaning projects for events like Football, Basketball, Baseball, and other assigned events.
  • Makes work assignments based on predetermined schedules, reviews employee work, assists in training new personnel, and assists in transporting custodians to work assignments.
  • Makes supply orders and deliveries, and completes labor tracking records.
  • Trains employees on the operation of various cleaning equipment such as commercial vacuum cleaners (uprights and backpack vacuums), wet/dry vac, backpack blower, auto scrubbers, pressure washer, shower machine, and carpet machines.
  • Conducts inspections of buildings and grounds in assigned areas.
  • Works with employees to ensure assigned building work orders and complaints are completed in a timely manner.
  • Ensures custodians have the proper materials and supplies to perform their jobs effectively.
  • Works with staff to make changes in their Cleaning Zone to ensure buildings are serviced in a timely manner according to department standards.
  • Responds to emergency situations during and after hours, including property damage, personal injury, water leaks, flooding, overflowing restroom fixtures, broken window or door glass, and accidents involving bodily fluids (blood, vomit waste, and urine).
  • Serves as a member of the Physical Plant Essential Personnel and participates in pre-emergency preparations and post-emergency recovery efforts as directed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by Custodial Leadership.
