About The Position

Custodians are responsible for maintaining multisensory excellence standards for all LU facilities, on and off campus, by way of cleaning and sanitizing interior spaces. Emphasizing a clean, orderly, and aesthetically pleasing environment; Custodians will work alongside teammates and supervisors, utilizing good judgement to support the University’s mission by providing a safe and sanitary environment. Custodians are considered essential personnel and are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delay, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather conditions. Any other duties as assigned.

Requirements

High school degree or GED
Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude
Clean and professional appearance
Must be courteous, detailed oriented, self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communication skills
Must be able to lift to 50+ pounds and perform duties of the Custodial trade in typical Virginia Climate and in an indoor/ outdoor setting
Must be willing to be trained and follow directions
Ability to carry out written instructions and implement tasks, as well as be able to bend, crouch, kneel, stand, and walk for long periods of time
Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information
Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner
Must be able to understand and follow instructions, and work under limited supervision
Must be able to maintain work areas in a clean and organized fashion
Must be flexible regarding work assignments, as they will routinely change
Must be able to think logically and solve problems that arise with little guidance
Must have basic knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions
Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business and community customers and associates
Strong organizational skills
Able to walk and stand on feet for 8-hour period
Able to physically perform all essential custodial functions for an entire workday
Able to bend, crouch, kneel, and work on hands and knees, when necessary
Able to walk up and down stairs
Able to perform repetitive motions including, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, wiping, and scrubbing
Able to operate cleaning and floor machines safely and properly
Able to work with arms lifted overhead
Able to work in dusty conditions
Vision adequate to see dust, debris, and moisture on floors and other surfaces
Able to work without allergies or sensitivities to cleaning agents, odors, and products used by the Facility department
Able to clean and sanitize areas when sewage backs up into a facility, or when bodily fluid/excrement is present
Able to work efficiently and competently individually or as part of a team
Must be able to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily hours as well as various evening hours
Ability to use radio and telephone to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions
Must be able to perform physically demanding work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, and standing, walking, and driving
Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required

Nice To Haves

1-3 years of related experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with residential, and/or commercial/ industrial cleaning (methods and safety) field is preferred
Working knowledge of safe and efficient operation of electrically and propane powered and manual cleaning equipment

Responsibilities

Daily cleaning and sanitizing of bathroom facilities: Floors, toilets, walls, partitions, sinks, mirrors, showers, windows, glass doors
Daily cleaning of interior facility spaces: Offices, halls, classrooms, labs, food service areas, common areas
General outdoor services and maintenance: Sweeping entry areas
Cleaning mirrors, windows, and glass doors as needed
Collects and disposes of trash and recyclable materials from all facilities
Provides custodial services for scheduled and unscheduled events: May include irregular shifts (nights, days, weekdays, weekends, holidays)
Attends to emergency needs as required
Wears, uses, and maintains proper personal protective equipment
Tracks safety data sheets, work orders, and facility forms
Observes safety rules and regulations
Identifies and reports safety issues, posting warning signs as needed
Stocks supplies in custodial closet for assigned building
Identifies and reports equipment, supplies, and repairs needed
Locks/unlocks classrooms as assigned
Secures campus buildings daily (doors and windows)
Completes assigned work orders (stripping, waxing, carpet cleaning)
Assists with campus graduations and other functions
Monitors lobbies and restrooms during events
Understands custodial methods, materials, chemicals, and equipment
Follows safety and sanitation practices
Prioritizes and manages multiple projects/tasks
Estimates material and equipment needs
Makes timely decisions appropriate to responsibility level
Supports established recycling efforts
Addresses urgent custodial needs (e.g., spills, body fluid clean-up)
Follows OSHA standards for blood-borne pathogen exposure control
Reports unsafe conditions, suspicious activity, and maintenance issues
Properly uses and manages cleaning supplies
Stays informed about emerging technologies and industry benchmarks
Works effectively as a team member, supporting LU's mission
Performs seasonal tasks (e.g., snow shoveling)
Completes other duties as assigned
