About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Director of General Services, or designee, plans, assigns, supervises and participates in the work of custodial staff responsible for maintaining City facilities in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition. Oversees custodial operation, including scheduling, training, inventory control & quality inspections. Ensures custodial staff follow proper cleaning procedures and safety practices. Performs custodial duties as needed and reports facility maintenance issues to appropriate personnel.

Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or equivalent and three years of custodial experience in office buildings or an institution; or some equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
  • Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Cleaning materials and disinfectants used in custodial work.
  • Safety practices and work methods; basic fire, safety and security regulations for school facilities.
  • Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Basic principles of training and providing work direction to others.
  • Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards.
  • Maintain tools and equipment assigned in clean working order.
  • Perform minor, non-technical, unskilled preventative maintenance on equipment, buildings, and fixtures to facilities as assigned.
  • Observe and report need for maintenance and repair.
  • Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds using safe and proper methods and/or equipment.
  • Move objects weighing over 50 pounds using safe and proper methods and/or equipment.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others.
  • Communicate effectively with other staff.
  • Work independently with little direction, and meet schedules and time lines.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Perform manual labor.
  • Train and provide work direction to others.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, assigns, schedules, and supervises the work of custodial personnel, and inspects work performed.
  • Inspects completed custodial work to ensure facilities are maintained in a neat, clean, and sanitary condition.
  • Trains custodial staff in proper cleaning methods, equipment use, chemical handling, and safety procedures.
  • Provides ongoing coaching and direction to custodial staff to ensure compliance with established standards and procedures.
  • Maintains adequate inventory levels of custodial supplies, chemicals, and equipment; distributes materials to custodial crews as needed.
  • Evaluates custodial equipment and supplies and recommends replacement or procurement when necessary.
  • Ensures custodial staff follow safe work practices and comply with applicable safety regulations.
  • Investigates and responds to service complaints regarding custodial services.
  • Inspects facilities and reports maintenance or repair needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports related to custodial operations, supplies, and staff activities.
  • Provides direction to volunteers or service workers assisting with custodial duties.
  • Operates City vehicles to travel between work sites.
  • Performs custodial duties as necessary to support operations.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
