About The Position

Big Bend Community College (BBCC), a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for a Custodian 1 in the college's Custodial Services Department. Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of custodial and general maintenance duties in and around campus facilities. This position reports to the Custodial Services Supervisor and works Monday through Thursday from 1:00pm to 10:00pm and Friday from 1:00pm to 7:30pm. Positions in the Custodial Services Department are represented by the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA). BBCC’s organizational strength is captured in our small but mighty spirit. Requirements

  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle in the course of duties, including maintaining a valid driver’s license and meeting acceptable driving standards.
  • Ability to perform custodial duties, including cleaning, sanitizing, and floor care
  • Ability to safely operate custodial equipment (e.g., vacuums, floor machines) or learn quickly
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively and report maintenance or safety concerns
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods
  • Ability to adhere to safety practices, including proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and accountability

Nice To Haves

  • Prior custodial, janitorial, or facilities maintenance experience
  • Experience with floor care (stripping, waxing, buffing, polishing)
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, sanitation standards, and infection control practices
  • Experience operating and maintaining custodial equipment
  • Experience with inventory tracking and supply management
  • Experience supporting event setup and breakdown (moving furniture, arranging spaces)
  • Experience with snow removal or outdoor maintenance
  • Basic knowledge of building security practices (locking facilities, setting alarms)

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine custodial duties including vacuuming carpets, sweeping, mopping, dust mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors
  • Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, and common areas, including dry erase boards, furnishings, windows, walls, tables, fixtures, and upholstered furniture
  • Empty trash and transport waste to designated collection areas; collect and remove recyclable materials
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, restrooms, toilets, sinks, floors, and high-touch surfaces
  • Restock and maintain custodial supplies, closets, and carts
  • Report maintenance issues such as burned-out light bulbs to supervisor
  • Provide coverage for other custodial staff as needed
  • Set up and arrange equipment, tables, chairs, and staging for campus events and activities, including off-site events such as graduation
  • Move furniture and equipment to support events and deep-cleaning needs
  • Assist with snow removal near building entrances during winter months
  • Shovel areas inaccessible to equipment and apply deicer as needed
  • Perform basic maintenance on custodial equipment, including changing pads, rotating rollers, and replacing batteries
  • Maintain automated dispensers, clocks, and related equipment
  • Track and maintain inventory of cleaning equipment and supplies
  • Record movement of materials between buildings
  • Ensure buildings are secured and alarms are set when acting as the last occupant
  • Operate campus vehicles and equipment, requiring a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance
  • Use and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including goggles, gloves, masks, protective clothing, and safety gear
  • Interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and community members
  • Maintain effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Follow instructions and work under supervision
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development
