About The Position

This position is for the 2026-2027 school year. Hours: 6am-2:30pm. This is a screened position. The Custodian 1, Head, will supervise custodians, perform cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assign tasks to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities. All district employees must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance, support the district’s vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan, engage in civility, respect, and professionalism, and maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of their positions.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in large scale housekeeping and yard maintenance knowledge, with one (1) year of related management or supervisory experience required.
  • All Custodians 1, Head employees must successfully complete Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) professional custodial training program and successful completion of the Custodial Operations Career Advancement Training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.
  • Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals.
  • Writes routine reports and correspondence.
  • Speaks effectively before groups of individuals.
  • Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Computes rate, ratio, and percent and draws and interprets bar graphs.
  • Solves practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and burnish floors, including vacuum and shampoo carpets as applicable.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms (includes all fixtures), restocks supplies, and removes and disposes of trash and waste products.
  • Maintains clean, organized custodial supply storage.
  • Performs minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks of facility (i.e. changes light bulbs, changes toilet seats, unclogs toilets, changes ceiling tiles, touches up paint, secures window(s), delivers supplies, sets up for facility activities, meetings, and/or conferences, assembles and moves furniture, etc.).
  • Executes a lawn program including, but not limited to: mowing (pushing and/or riding), weeding, weed-eating, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal, as appropriate.
  • Opens or closes and secures facility; including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems. Turn on and off all lights making sure that grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards. Responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
  • Attends in-service meetings to remain updated with technology changes in field; train staff on proper cleaning techniques.
  • Develops schedules for custodial staff in areas applicable to positions and assignments.
  • Prepares all required reports and maintains confidential records (i.e. maintenance requests, inventory, payroll), using basic computer skills as applicable.
  • Supervises assigned personnel, monitor staff performance, and make immediate improvements.
  • Maintains dependable transportation and updated working telephone in accordance with Hillsborough County Public School Policy.
  • Possess basic comprehensive skills of the working English language.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
