Curatorial Research Associate, Art of Europe
About The Position
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, seeks a part-time Curatorial Research Associate (CRA) to work under the direction of the William and Ann Elfers Curator of Paintings, Art of Europe, aiding with the research, administration, and implementation of multiple projects in 19th-century European art, including permanent collection activity, as well as ambitious exhibitions, such Renoir and Love and Degas Portraits: Facing Modernity. These exhibitions, which both open in Boston in 2027, also highlight strengths of the MFA’s permanent collection. Reporting to the William and Ann Elfers Curator of Paintings, Art of Europe, the CRA will carry out a range of exhibition-related responsibilities. This position offers an opportunity to engage in all curatorial aspects of exhibition planning, execution, and evaluation. Research and administrative tasks will foster collaboration with teams across the Museum responsible for exhibition preparation, interpretation, design, and installation. The candidate will be challenged to think expansively and contribute creative ideas for integrative exhibition displays and engaging programming. The Curatorial Research Associate will strengthen the capacity of the curatorial team and Art of Europe Department, while gaining hands-on experience in exhibition development and professional growth. This role reflects the MFA’s commitment to expanding opportunities for early-career museum professionals and cultivating the next generation of cultural sector staff.
Requirements
- Advanced degree in European art history, or equivalent related experience, demonstrating scholarly ability through publications, conference papers, and other activities.
- Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with the art, history, and culture of France.
- Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking French.
- Experience working in museums or related settings, preferably within a curatorial department.
- Committed to collaboration with others to achieve the best outcome.
- Excellent and timely decision maker able to move plans and objectives forward.
- Strong sense of accountability for achieving stated objectives and demonstrable experience doing so.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication, with demonstrated presentation skills.
- Organized and able to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
